I understand that the Quadro 2000 uses significantly more power than the 1000, about twice as much.

    1000M is 45W, 2000M is 55W. Is that double?

No, but I know I saw somewhere in the W520 threads that the power consumption of the 2000 is significantly greater than that of the 1000.

I also don't know if those wattage figures are static -- always burning at that rate -- or if they throttle with usage; could be T-pad Power Manager thing.

The Lenovo W520 in the review uses the same 2000M and gets 7 hours. There is something wrong with Dell's power saving settings.

That's the max listed wattage. The only difference is more CUDA cores between 1000/2000. The 4000M is twice the wattage, though.

Here's how to remove the keyboard with pictures, this allows you access to the 2 DIMM slots under the keyboard.

    • Take the battery out.
    • Hit the power button.
    • Pop the plastic panel surrounding the keyboard, it's easiest to start at the back on each side and then work forward levering the panel away from the base, it might take a little force to get it started. Best to use something very thin and plastic so as not to mark the chassis finish. (I'll try and add a pic for this later.)

    • You'll find four screws (red circles) at the leading edge of the keyboard, remove these.
    • The sides of the keyboard are held in with little tabs (aprox. green circles) on the chassis. Work your way from the front to back on each side to release the keyboard from the tabs. You'll want to put pressure on each tab, when you get to it, to release the keyboard from it.
    • Slide out the keyboard to the front.
    • Remove the keyboard ribbon, if you want.
    • You'll see both the DIMM slots available. The pic below shows the two modules installed.

    • Reverse to put back together.

A graphics card with a few less shader units, let's say 144, and GDDR5 would make more sense than the Nvidia 2000M with DDR3. By the way , are the speakers any good?

It depends of what task u will do with your computer : I use CS5 production and CUDA is very useful for editing HD in real time...but you need a nvidia card for that ! That's why I took the Quadro 2000M in my M4600

Does the low bandwidth of DDR3 act as bottleneck in such applications?
