    Hi all just got my m4400 and upgraded to vista business via the dell disks. Now the backlit keyboard dosen't work. It was working under XP. It on in the BIOS and the controlpoint. Any Ideas????

    Do you have Dell Control Point installed? If you have, check there if it's activated.

    If I don't use their Dell bloatware os, can i put the Control Point software on my own version of Vista Ultimate OR Win 7

    It may have been just coincidence that your keyboard backlight crapped out after installing vista.
    I don't have any DCP installed and the keyboard backlight work's the same under XP,ubuntu and windows 7,which indicate's to me that it is controlled at the bios level.

    Yup...don't have any of the DCP installed either and backlight works fine. It's probably deativated in BIOS.

    I have the dell control point installed and have it ativated there, also have it activate in the BIOS no joy...time to ring dell have it support with onsite nbd warrenty should I just give the dell tech a call instead of dell direct

    I've got the ambient light sensor enabled as well, need to sort this rather quickly

    Hmm yeah seems it's just not functioning then :( Could just be a defective keyboard or loose connectore somewhere, no biggie.
    I'd disable the ambient light sensor, one of the most useless function on the laptop imho..it keeps changing the brightness when your only moving to the side a bit or something.

    Thnaks guys tech came out today all set now lights up well. Any tips I should know bout this beauty?
