    Hi all,

did anybody ever try to successfully run and configure Windows Server 2008 x64 on a Precision M4400?

It installs fine, but I cannot get some components working with the Vista x64 drivers - like WiFi !?

    Any idea or suggestion?

    Thanks,
    Christian

all have it in a multi boot with windows 7 x64

all i did is right click on the wireless adapter in device manager, click update driver and then point it to the dell\drivers folder on the windows 7 partition....job done :)

    Hey Barn,

    good one! :)
I will wait until I get my official copy of Windows 7 Beta soon - and then I cross fingers that it will work as easy as you describe ;)

Is there already a dell\drivers folder on Win 7 or where did you get these from?

    Thanks again for answering.

    Cheers,
    Christian

the dell drivers folder gets created when you install dell drivers.

The driver download unpacks itself into a folder inside the dell folder and then the installer runs from there.

    hope that made sense lol,
i had to read that twice myself :)

Yes, I am aware of the folder structure when you install DELL drivers.

My point actually was: I did download the Vista x64 and installed them on my Server 2008 x64 - and this failed (well, it did not fail, but I cannot use WiFi as Windows complains about exceptions occurring).

    Thanks,
    Christian

hey barn which do you think runs better on covet?
I have to do heavy video compositing and hard living around, and I'm planning to make 3 partitions on the m6400

1 with the winxp x64 that come with it

    1 with Win 7 OR server 2008 R2 (that's the question)

1 with Leopard (d a m n copywriters, photographers, sound techs and all their stupid macs)

ps: + 1 more with Backtrack 3.... can be usefull sometimes

    what model is wireless card?

I'm getting my m4400 shipped next week. I'm planning to install windows 2008 x64. The wireless card is Dell Wireless 1510.

I tried the Vista x64 driver from Dell to install in my workstation (with windows 2008 x64), the driver didn't even install, said the system is not supported. Maybe I need to cancel my order.

    Thanks
    John

just use the method in http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=340326 thread to get dell drivers to install in server 2008/windows 7 and server 2008 r2

if that doesn't work try this..............

download and install Universal Extractor from http://legroom.net/software/uniextract

next, create a new folder and save the driver file you downloaded from the dell website into that folder.

next right click on the downloaded file and you will see the option to "UniExtract Here.Select that option and all the files from the installer will be extracted into the folder.

if you get a message about install shield or something, select the none install shield option and it should work ok.

now, depending on the driver, you will have the setup.exe right there, or it may be inside a folder named "" payload.""

If you have no setup.exe, just a bunch of .inf files then you need to go to device manager, right click on the hardware your trying to install, ie the wireless adapter, select update driver software, then select browse my computer for driver software-

then browse to the folder you just uniextracted the driver in and click next.
windows will find and install the driver for you!
    done.......... :)

Anyone have luck with the M4400 and Windows Server 2008 x64? I'm considering it heavily, but I'm concerned about drivers for WiFi, Verizon card, webcam, etc. Please let me know!
