yes, I've got the 4K screen

I read that there might be some interference issues between WWAN card and 4K screen...

But to remove the screen in order to insert the antenna sounds complicated and risky unfortunately

 

My best guess is that the 4k screen needs a 40-pin eDP connector where as the others use a 30-pin so the ribbon connector is a little more narrow making space for an additional wire for the antenna for the WWAN. That is a complete guess on my part and would need to be confirmed by a Dell engineer. I know on the current line-up of Alienwares they have several different motherboard configurations depending on whether or not you have G-Sync screen as this requires a different video pipeline and is mutually exclusive with Optimus. They then also have 30-pin for anything 1080p and 40-pin for UHD screens. So 4 different motherboard combos at one point (not sure of current offerings) - I would not put it past them to do something similar on the Precisions.

 

I'm aware of these motherboard variants in the Alienware line, but most Precision models have the same motherboard design no matter what configuration is ordered (aside from the separate soldered-on CPU). At some points there have been two variants (Thunderbolt vs non-Thunderbolt in 7X10, and LVDS vs eDP in some earlier models), but nothing that would mess with WWAN. We have seen, for example, upgrades from 900p to 4K displays without issue, swapping between AMD and NVIDIA GPUs, and as I mentioned previously, users installed the WWAN card into 7X10 and 7X20 machines that shipped with 4K displays and had it work, even though it was not possible to order a new system that way.

My best guess is the 4K screen creates some kind of interference that impedes WWAN performance (the antennas go next to the screen after all) and that's why Dell has declared it incompatible.

In any case, you could always go with a USB WWAN device or a standalone hotspot, for less hassle.

 

An internal WWAN would be my only preferred option otherwise I could just use my phone's hotspot.

Can I just leave the antennas cables flying around the case? Why it must be inside the screen?

I ordered the cables from a German ebay seller, but it looks like it will be a month for delivery....

 

You can put the antennas anywhere as long as you can get the cables connected to the card. Obviously, the specific position may impact the signal quality, near an edge seems like the best place for them to go (but I suspect if you are in a good service area, it will be fine just about anywhere you put it).

 

I would rather just use my cell phone hotspot and not have to pay for yet another line every month on the same "unlimited" data plan - same reason I do NOT get cellular tablets since I ALWAYS have my phone on me no matter what. I would rather carry an external battery than pay $10-$15 each a month for the ability to have cellular on other devices

 

Could everybody who have already got Precisions 3530, 5530, 7530 or 7730 please post pictures of their box? I am interested specifically in security tape on the boxes since it looks very suspicious in my case.

 

I can confirm that, with 4K screen, there is completely no antennas for wwan at all, just checked.

But, perhaps you can add antennas by yourself.

That's a tracking site for a carrier used in Europe. To track your order, you need to get the tracking number from Dell, which you will only get once your order ships. It will be on the order status page. There will also be a link directly to the carrier's page for tracking. There is no way to track the status of your order other than using the Dell order status page.
