Precision 7560 & 7760 Owners' Thread

I've had my 7760 for a couple months now: here's what I love about it and don't like about it:

Things that surprised me for the better:
1.) Display - I went with the 500nid non-hd display, a step up from the cheapest but not the ultra hd. (I choose this for cost, to avoid scailing issues, and for better battery life.) I'm very happy with this choice. It's as good or better than my desktop dell displays which is impressive. Based on my previous two precision screens I had not expected it to be this good.
2.) Overall performance is a nice step up.
3.) Metal lid feels very solid when opening and closing

Things that I don't like about the 7760 compared to previous generation precisions:
1.) Battery connection and access - it seems like a much more fragile battery connection than early precision models. I didn't dare disconnect it because it's got a tape strap to pull out the little connector and I was worried it would break. Also the access to the battery requires the back panel to be completely removed. I've had phones that got a swelled battery and laptops whose battery got weak while the laptop was still strong, so the previous generation precision easy access/strong, easy connector seemed like a definite strength and the 7760's battery connection/no access panel seems like a step back to me.
2.) Sloped back /bottom panel seems more difficult/fragile than previous generations. I don't really like the sloped back, but I suppose that's a matter of taste. My previous generation precision seemed very secure to open/close. I only did it once to add an SSD drive, but I felt like my previous generation was safer to do that. The new one was ok, but the warning about pulling it off this way to avoid cracking felt a little fragile to me.

Neutrals:
1.) FIPS fingerprint reader is slower than my other non FIPS reader, but for me it also seems more accurate. Occassionaly my non FIPS reader will say it can't recognize me and I have to enter my PIN about once a month, and so far the FIPS reader has been right on. I can see my fingerprint on the FIPS reader so I make sure to drag my finger after I've been recognized so as not to leave a fingerprint on it.
2.) I miss the one additional right side USB port of my previous generation, but I'll get used to not having it.
3.) The ethernet port on the 7760 is harder to connect/disconnect with the spring loaded "door" on the ethernet port. I don't really see the point of that and prefer the standard ethernet port on previous generation precisions. But it works, and is ok.

 

Just got a BSOD on my 7760. Something about Power Watchdog Timeout. It happened when I moved the mouse to wake the screens. On boot wanted to run a mem test but I hit ESC and booted fine. Using bluescreen view it shows the error was with ntoskrnl.exe

I have it in the WD19DCS dock.

System us up to date except did not install the 21H2 windows feature update yet. Will probably do tonight.

Programs I had open include Outlook, Word, Edge, and Bluebeam.

Any ideas?

Edit ran the from hitting F12 at the dell logo and running diagnostics. It ran the quick diag. Took around 20 minutes and no errors.

 

Do you all use screen protectors? My last Precision was an M6700 Covet, with the glass display. I really liked that for the cleanability aspect. It wasn't so great for glare, but I didn't have to be super careful about smudges.

 

No screen protector here. I honestly don't have trouble keeping the display clean (just don't touch it!). When I do need to clean a spot, a slightly damp micro-fiber cloth does the trick just fine. (Dry it right away to avoid a streak.)

 

I use a wet towel. Works wonders for all surfaces of the laptop, actually.

My dock order got cancelled on me with no record of it ever having been made. Trying again.

 

So after contacting support about my 7760 not booting, and randomly finally working, they are going to change the motherboard and a few other parts. Just one question, what is the consensus on the ram sticks models that are compatible with this pc? I am planning on changing this soon as well. Looking for ones that are not 1Rx8.

 

I have had my 7760 since September and there are some quirks:

• Occasionally I'll get an error message when booting after I have plugged the dock in. Something about not enough power. I think the twin plugs aren't seating correctly as it takes a few goes to get it to work again. Then it gets confused and thinks there are multiple docks.
• Static noises through my external speakers. This one drives me nuts. I keep trying to uninstall the Realtek drivers but don't have much success. Any tips?

 

I have experienced the same dock/power/error messages on my Precision 7530. (Haven't tried the dock much on my 7560.) So, unfortunately, "normal" behavior. You might have better luck by also connecting power directly to the system and not relying on the dock for power.

Are your external speakers connected via dock, or 3.5mm port on the system, or ...?
My suggestion would actually be to just get a USB DAC and bypass the Realtek audio controller altogether. Apple's USB-C to 3.5mm adapter is cheap and works well.
