Thanks! Boy, Windows Defender is AGGRESSIVE about it, too!

Unfortunately, that didn't work. Now I have 0x803fa067, which indicates that it might be an upgrade error? I ordered this computer with Win 10 Pro. It's from the outlet, so it may have had Home on it at some point.

I do have the original SSD that I can pop back in to activate. I think I'll try that before I contact Dell again.

Hmmm. Wonder if I can just put it in an enclosure and boot from the enclosure? Less of a hassle than swapping drives...

What exactly didn't work? If it didn't show a product key, then it's quite possible that there is NOT a Windows key burned into the BIOS (in which case there is no reason to believe that automatic activation would work even with the original SSD). Still....... Dell may well require that you try with the original SSD before doing anything to fix it.

Windows won't boot a drive via USB (unless it is set up specifically with "Windows To Go").

Sorry, I should have been more descriptive. It was a long night.

I got a product key, but trying to activate using that key got me no different results.

I swapped the original SSD back in (and will keep it there for the time being), and STILL got the same results. I did NOT remove the two extra sticks of RAM, nor the second SSD. I think I will try that next, but I don't have great hopes.

I have reached out to my sales rep's alternate, as my sales rep is out of the office until the 15th.

In the meantime, I will try removing the second SSD and the extra RAM and see what happens. Regardless, I'll put them back in and start copying files over to the second (data) SSD. At least I can get THAT done while I wait for Dell.

Thanks, I'll try it. What are the possible consequences of activating by phone, if I eventually upgrade to Windows 11 (which is supposed to be included for free on this machine)?

FWIW, as I suspected, removing the extra RAM and the secondary SSD did not do the trick, but I wanted to try for thoroughness' sake.

ProSupport tried reinstalling Windows using the SupportAssist OS Recovery tool. Same error. Tech thinks it might be a motherboard issue.

Edit: They've escalated the case so I can get a replacement product key. In the meantime, I can continue with non-OS-specific set-up stuff.

I've done this a few times and never encountered a downside. Upgrade in-place to Windows 11 should be no issue, a new activation would not be necessary as long as the hardware is not changed. (Despite the name change, nothing license-related changed from Windows 10 to Windows 11, they are using the same product key pool even.)

    Thanks for your answer rinconmike!
I tried the firmware update, and the SSD had already the latest one.
Also, installing the same SSD on any of the PCIe 3.0 ports, the SSD runs at a normal temp of around 50°C.

Did you keep your Samsung 2TB on the PCIe 4.0 port? Also, do you have the bottom cover with the "SSD Quick Access Door".
Because I was wondering if that may be the issue with my equipment, given the fact that the infamous SSD quick access door is made of plastic, and the SSD metal plate has no contact with any of the copper strips of the bottom cover. And that may be causing the thermal issues with the SSD located on that port.

Turns out that the motherboard had been replaced, and someone dropped the ball on the license. I have received a new key and am now activated.

I left the 2TB in the PCIe 4.0 and that is the only SSD I have now. I also have the Quick Access Door. Do you have the latest bios?
