I've been looking at HP's ZBook series, and it appears HP has changed its business lineup somewhat. It has got five sub-brands under ZBook now, approximately matched to their Dell equivalents:
    • ZBook Firefly — Vostro/Precision 3000?
    • ZBook Create — XPS
    • ZBook Studio — Precision 5000 series
    • ZBook Power — Latitude/Precision 3000?
    • ZBook Fury — Precision 7000
In particular, I've been looking at the ZBook Fury G7 15 (that's a mouthful), and it has graphics options up to the Quadro RTX 5000 Max-Q (same as the Precision 7540/7550). It also has a removable graphics card in a proprietary form factor that looks remarkably similar to the Dell DGFFs (especially the LGA-style beam connectors), except that the HP cards don't appear to have outputs directly on the card.

The keyboard layout is also somewhat better than that on the 7550; it still has the TrackPoint control, and the extra buttons on top of the trackpad, which is also bigger than that on the 7550. It has tool-less access, and the whole teardown process is a lot more straightforward than that of the 7550; not to mention that the ZBook has plenty of display options that the 7550 lacks.

Unfortunately, though, a given specification of the Fury G7 15 is around US$1500 more expensive than an equivalently-specified Precision 7550. I can't find part numbers for the removable cards, either, which means buying a cheaper configuration and upgrading may also not be possible.

I'm always keeping an eye on HP... Seems like they're the only other mobile workstation vendor that I would consider using.

I do like this keyboard a little bit more than the current Dell one. My requirements to be happy are basically dedicated Home/End buttons, with dedicated PageUp/PageDown being a nice plus, and they hit the mark there (and Dell does not). I would like to see arrow keys that are all the same size, but I understand that is not really possible to pull off without wasting space or a somewhat strange design. And, um, they do have the power button in a pretty strange spot... (Couldn't care less about the trackpoint, in fact I'd sort of prefer that it not be there.)

My hesitations with regards to HP:
    * Extra cost, for high-end configurations in particular (as you mentioned)
    * Service/support (good and bad stories on both sides but people seem to generally think that Dell has a leg up here)
    * Community support — If you go to the HP forum here you'll find a lot less activity on ZBook G-series threads than here on the Precision 7000-series threads... so it seems that there are just less users
    * Upgrades — HP has a history of whitelisting components so you can't just install whatever hardware you want ... you'll need an HP Wi-Fi card and I rather doubt that cross-generation GPU upgrades would work (unless they've relaxed this in the pretty recent past)
    * Fan control — Since I have Dell fan control figured out with a configuration that I am quite happy with, I don't like the idea of having to figure that out on a different platform (if its even possible)

So, blah. More than likely, sticking with Dell for the next go-round.

I will also note the Zbook Fury G7 (15 and 17) has a unified CPU + GPU vapor chamber (similar to Razer) if you order the RTX 3000 + or any Radeon GPU option. There is a MUX switch for the internal display, but sadly no second MUX to control the USB-C display output source - so those are ALWAYS tied to the dedicated graphics.

Are there any rumors about a successor to the 7730/7740/7750? New versions usually get released around May from what I recall. I think it's getting to be time to replace my 7730 with something more powerful.

I had my fair share of issues with one of those. Last September, before buying into new 17 7750 had two HP G17. I ordered one and had to change it because thermal issues. The second did the same. Got money back (with no hassle I might note) and gone for some new 7750.
With Dell new the thermal issues started after 6 months of daily usage and it seems impossible to open the "capsulated" fan-heatsink assembly. So there's that.
Also quite big comparing with the old m6700.

Anyway. Way bigger and heavier. Still hot. With glass screen the machine is close to 1kg plus heavier.

Anywhere on this internet can I find an video or some documentation on opening the 17 7750 for 4000quadro fan heatsink assembly?
After 6 months it does need cleaning.
