Precision 7550 & 7750 Owners' Thread

The line is to separate the plastic part from the aluminum part. Maybe it is only present if you order the system with WWAN antennas? (I think the Wi-Fi antennas have been moved to the system base with this generation?) They can't be put in a fully aluminum enclosure.

One big old red flag for me here is the word "McAfee". To be honest, I have found the built-in Windows Antivirus along with good habits to be perfectly sufficient. McAfee is an immense resource hog capable of crippling desktop systems - I have no idea why they are still in business, but I suspect a lot of government contractors would rather renew something year over year than actually research what really works in today's threat environment. However, if you are working with sensitive information, you may not have a choice in the corporate software loadout of your workstation. In situations where my laptop was starting to thermal throttle, I'd elevate the back with a metal CD case in the middle rear, and that seemed to improve the airflow situation.

IF you have local administrator privileges - and you should - then you can try disabling some Windows services that are consuming a lot of resources (like Windows Search and others that don't benefit end users, yet consume a lot of CPU cycles when they run). Also - how many VMs are you running? My experience with a 7730 is that these laptops can run maybe 2 or 3 on the very outside, after which you start losing keypresses inside the VMs. Also, if you are running a Windows VM within Windows, then the problems I just mentioned with Windows services consuming resources goes double - ideally, your Windows host is paired down to a minimum. If you have more than one NVME drive and are doing any sort of RAIDing or striping, I'd advise just keeping it very simple, and assigning VMs to dedicated drives.

Finally, I would press F12 or DEL when it boots from a power-on schenario and keep it at the BIOS screen a while. If you're seeing high fan speeds at the BIOS screen, then none of this really matters - it could be a very bad CPU paste job or something that fundamentally is interfering with your ability to operate.

 

Does somebody have a 7550 with contactless smart card reader/NFC ?. Which is the location of the contactless reader?.
My 7550 does not have the usual icon on the right of the touchpad on the palm rest. The system does not detect any smartcard there.

But it seems it is detected, if I use the smart card exactly in the middle of the touchpad.
Is the middle of the touchpad the location of the contactless reader?. Then the touchpad could not be used by using a smartcard at the same time. This was possible in older precisions. For me, this would be a minus point for the 7550, as I used this in other systems.

Can somebody confirm this? Or is something wrong in my system?

A few questions.

1. Does anyone here have a Precision 7550/7750 with the FIPS/normal fingerprint reader, and ordered their machine with Ubuntu? Does the fingerprint reader work, and authenticates log-ins in Linux?
2. Does anyone here have a Precision 7750 with the Quadro RTX 5000? If so, can you upload a VBIOS dump (NOT extracted with GPU-Z, but with nvflash instead). Thanks!

 

There was some chatter about this earlier in the thread. Linux fingerprint login has never worked with the Precision and the same is the case with this model. (Dell used to block if you tried to order a system with both Linux and the fingerprint reader... but they're not doing that anymore, they will allow it even though it does not work.)

 

This was sort of why I asked, actually, because I assumed that now that they allowed selling Ubuntu even with the fingerprint reader, they had a working driver.

Anyway, running lsusb returns this strange device:

Looking a little deeper into it, it turns out that both the NFC reader and the fingerprint reader plug into this daughterboard called the BroadCom Universal Security Hub (USH), which was apparently a joint Dell-BC effort. The Windows driver for the chip on this daughterboard is ControlVault, and it has a vendor:device ID of 0A5C:5834. Wonder what it'd take to get this working.

 

Wanted to confirm if the WWAN connections wires are provided in 7550 with WWAN enabled display even if the Mobile Broadband card is not ordered?

Specifically, can a Mobile Broadband card be added later in a 7550 with WWAN enabled display?

Also, are 7540 and 7550 Mobile Broadband cards inter-compatible or same?

Will be grateful if someone can provide urgent inputs.
