I used HWINFO64 to determine the PN of the RAM units and bought the same ones.

That said, I did the same thing as you are contemplating and I don't think it's really contributing anything. When I go into Task Manager, I note that the memory usage rarely goes above about 6GB, meaning that having 16GB of RAM would've been plenty. :(

My system came with 32GB and I upgraded it to 64GB. Whether or not you need that memory depends on your workload. Light computing won't get anywhere near 32GB. I do database development and appreciate being able to work on SQL databases a big data jobs locally. I was pushing the system above 50GB earlier today. :)

Excellent, thank you. I ended up picking up two G.SKILL modules so I'm ramped up to 64 GB of RAM now. Everything seems to be running smoothly.

In my case I'm often working with large numbers of photos in Adobe Lightroom and numerous other apps. I'm expecting doubling my RAM will help in certain scenarios, so I suspect it will be worth it.

RAM capacity might help in those, but it's usually CPU + GPU throughput that helps most for AV editing.

Okay, now that's a large database. When I was a software developer working on databases the biggest I was working on was probably a tenth of that size.

I'm a full time photographer, so I'm working with large amounts of photos. *e.g. just one shoot last week was 170 GB of raw photos.) If during processing those photos I can shave off a few seconds here or there, or gift that high priestess known as Lightroom ample RAM to keep her happy, it will pay off for me. :)

Everything seems to be running a little smoother since I doubled the RAM yesterday. I also put in a 2 TB 970 EVO SSD for more storage.

    This machine is a beast.

Yep, but Lightroom is an inefficient dog at the best of times, so I'm giving it lots of elbow room.

The easy way to tell is to just check the total system memory utilization in Task Manager, on the "Performance" tab. If you are approaching using all of your RAM then you could benefit from having some more. (Windows will start paging stuff out to disk so it often will not appear that you are using *all* of your RAM.) If you are not bumping up near the limit, then there's not really much point.

I understand that. But I'd rather put my focus into being productive with my endless to-do list than watching the Performance tab. :-D

Anyone have a take on this new dock versus the TB18DC? I'm thinking of getting a second dock for a second location where I'll be frequently working.
