I live in Australia and am interested in the Precision 5510. Unfortunately you are unable to order it on Dell's Australian site and it says 'Please call for latest prices' - dell.com/au/business/p/precision-m5510-workstation/pd

I contacted Dell and received a quote for the base model - $4,533.10 (inc. GST) - equivalent to about $3,100 US.

The base model XPS 15 is able to be ordered online for $1,899 (about $1,300 US) - dell.com/au/p/xps-15-9550-laptop/pd - which is only moderately more expensive than the model in the US ($999) - dell.com/us/p/xps-15-9550-laptop/pd

The Precision starts at $1,399 in the US - dell.com/us/business/p/precision-m5510-workstation/pd - which makes it literally double the price (exc. GST) in Australia than in the US, and double the price of the XPS 15 here too.

This makes the Precision an exceedingly unattractive purchase option in Australia, and inconvenient for users who desire its specific features.

Does anyone know why Dell is operating this way, and why they wouldn't market it at a sensible price with online purchasing options in Australia? Is the case similar in other non-US markets too?

It sounds like they're just quoting you list price, which is a away of saying "we don't want to bother to make the sale."

If you have access to other sales channels (e.g. actually phoning if you used email, going through a local VAR, or a friend's premier account), try one of those.

If you don't have access to other sales channels, it can't hurt to just contact them again and go "OK, this isn't a realistic price, what's the real/regular discount level you sell at?" The worst they can do is say is "that is the real price," and not offer anything better.

It is possible that they price it the way they did because right now they're at capacity selling those machines in bigger markets, but I doubt it -- if so, the price should come down in a couple months.
