Any ideas if/when Dell have sales to clear out old stock before introducing an updated product line?

I assume the Skylake range of Precisions will be due out January or February latest... so are we looking at sales in the New Year? What has happened in years past?

I presume you mean Kaby Lake as Skylake has been around for the past year. I would expect Dell to phase in the new models progressively and avoid having any glut of old models so any discounting above whatever is already shown is unlikely to be big.

Dell Outlet is the place to go if you want Dell notebooks at sale prices. Stock there is either new (eg cancelled orders) or like new unless specifically sold as "scratch and dent" and everything has the standard Dell warranty. The drawback is often not being able to get the exact preferred specification.

Yes sorry I mean Kaby Lake

So traditionally there's no clearance sales before updated models, as there are with Thinkpads etc

I haven't noticed such sales but that doesn't mean that they don't happen. However, I only monitor Dell UK Outlet (not much stock at the moment due to a success of sales during the past month) which has its own coupons (click on the Work Deals tab here to see what is on offer). My Precision 5510 set me back £927 including a 3 year warranty and VAT. Today's price for the same spec from the Dell UK site would be £2090 including VAT after deduction of the advertised discount of £779 (before VAT). Dell would need to push up that discount a long way before it matches the Outlet pricing. If the pricing of old models at Dell Outlet is a guide then Dell may prefer to shift old stock slowly with a higher price to people who specifically want the old model for some reason.

Dell doesn't really do "sales" at all on the Precisions. When new models are introduced, the old ones will still be available for sale (slightly cheaper than the new ones) for a few months, and then the remaining stock will be sold off through the outlet (that's where you can find cheap ones as John mentioned). Special discounts normally come in the form of coupons that they cycle through every few weeks.
