The sound output (playing high quality music files mostly) from the headphone jack is HORRENDOUS. It's as if the playback sampling rate is somewhere around 8 KHz (like listening to music from a radio speaker despite being connected to a very decent speaker system).

I am extremely pissed off with this. This is on an Precision M2400, with so called "HD Audio". I've looked up the sound card component (IDT 92HD001) and it is supposed to support high quality audio.

Is this normal for Dell Latitude / Precision lines ?

I've updated drivers, looked all over the control panel for changing playback quality settings (none available) and hardware acceleration. Nothing works ...

Problem went away when I installed Vista. I guess Dell just didnt have the right drivers for XP ... Vista installation identified the sound card as HD Audio compatiable.

I guess I am stuck with Vista now.
