    Hey guys,

    A word of advice please.

I currently own a Dell M6700 configured with an i7 3740qm and ATI m6000. I recently bought from Dell a K5000m heatsink that I plan to use with my future 780m. Before I buy the 780m I have a couple of questions, just to be sure i go ahead with the purchase

    1. Do I need a Dell 780m or will the Clevo version work (as it's a bit cheaper afaik)
    2. Be it clevo or dell, do I need custom vbios or they are plug and play?
    3. What thickness do the thermal pads need to be on the card? vram and what else needs to be covered by pads

Please bear in mind that even though I'm no stranger to computers, this is my first intervention on this laptop and need to get it right the first time.

If anybody can help me go through with this process I will gladly contribute with pics of the entire operation

    Thank you !

    Let me answer your questions:
    1. So far only the Dell 780M has been tested in the M6700 and reported working OK, but I'm sure the Clevo 780M would too.
    2. You do not need any custom vbios with a Dell card, and you shouldn't with a Clevo's.
    3. If you have bought the K5000M heatsink brand new, it should already comes with the thermal pads correctly positionned, and at the right thicknesses. As the Dell Kepler cards share the exact same layout, you shouldn't need to move or replace those pads. Just to make sure everything is well set up though, I usually lay down the card on the heatsink, and check if there are any gaps between the pads and the parts they are supposed to cover; there shouldnt be any.

Pretty curious that nobody has tried this, or at least hasn't bragged about it. I did a search on the forum and there are no specific instruction about a 780m in m6700.

Thank you very much for the feedback !

Can you please tell me what about the video ram on the back of the card, is there any heatsink installed for those ram modules or there are some thermal pads installed? Do you know the thickness of the pads if there are any installed?

    Thank you !

I don't think precision use those x-bracker/spreader with back vram heatsink, alienware x-bracket do have them. Not sure if it will fit but it should.

    here is the info
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...ttra-help-geforce-gtx780-dell-m-6600-a-3.html
Okay, just have a chinese user do it few days ago, he said the x-bracket with extra "spreader" may not fit? Need to use thinner thermal pad on back side?

Again confirm no need flash vbios if dell card.

Edit: I reread it again, he is saying those alienware x-bracket with back "heatsink" will not fit. But he saying he put thermal pad on back vram.

There have been some posts with specific directions for installing the 680m in the M6600 and M6700, including details about the heatsink... Should be a similar process for the 780m.
