I was configuring a Vostro 1720 and the only version of Windows 7 Professional available is 32bit. If I were to order more than 3GB of ram, anything extra would be a waste. My question is this, can I call Dell after the fact and get a 64bit disc for free? I know Dell was doing that with Vista but I don't know if they are also doing it with Windows 7.

I don't see why they wouldn't... after all, the keys for 7 32 and 64 should be the same. Nonetheless, you should probably call them yourself to check for sure; at the very worst, I think they'll just charge you for it.

I'd suggest contacting Dell well before the 30-day Return Policy is expired. Just so you have that extra leverage if they aren't accomodating! ;)
