Would this be possible? I think the i7 2nd gen quad is possible, could I put in a 3rd gen i7 or would the bios/microde throw me an error. I have a relative that really like that laptop and they just want an ssd/ram/cpu upgrade.

The Ivy Bridge (3rd gen) upgrade is an unknown, but if the laptop came stock with a Sandy Bridge (2nd gen) CPU, odds are good you can't move "up". Ivy Bridge chipsets / mainboards are backwards-compatible with Sandy, but not the other way around.

For what it's worth, a good few years ago i did actually "shoehorn" an i7-2720qm into my previous laptop, a Thinkpad E520 (stock it came with an i5-2430m) with no issues.
