EDIT: There is another, even newer driver available from the E4300/E4200. Thanks to Logan_Nolag for posting that. It is even more responsive than the Studio driver.

The touchpad is now up there with the Synaptics from my old XPS m140.

Thanks for fonduekid for posting this over in the Inspiron/Studio forum.

I tried it on my E6400, and it updated to the newer drivers without issue. I am definitely noticing a diffference in the touchpad.

Has anyone figured out how to get the ALP touchpad to go forward backward on things like web browser pages etc ?

With the ALPs on our Inspiron 8600's you just swipe across the top of the pad right to left to go forward and left to right to go back.

I any setting relating to this on the current Dell ALPs application.

I've got 3 users breathing down my neck here on this...so thanks for any ideas!

Nope, I personally haven't seen that feature on any touchpad. It isn't as common as you might think.

And that is another step above the Studio driver, time to edit the original post.

    Thanks Logan!

Greg thanks for posting about the newer drivers.

I did manage to enable the forward/backward feature on the ALPs touchpad.

    Here's how;

First go to control panel and select MOUSE to see what options are available (very few) and close that all up.

Next click on the Windows Start icon and type regedit in the search box.
    Windows Registry will open.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Alps\Apoint and look for the key; (it's the 2nd to last entry on the list)

    UseCustomGUI

Change the value from 1 to 0 and click on OK

Next minimize the registry (don't close it yet).

Goto Control Panel and select MOUSE.
Now all the ALPs settings are unlocked and appear here.

Select the GESTURES tab and check ON the box for
    Use Back/Forward Buttons.
    Then click APPLY and OK.
Close the Mouse settings and close the Control panel.

Now go back to your registry setting and change
UseCustomGUI back to it's original value of 1 and close it and the reg editor.
Everything is back exactly as it was but the feature remains enabled.

All done....now when your surfing just swipe your finger along the top edge of the touch pad to go back and forward :) Btw this works for any app that can go in these directions.

The usual disclaimer about playing with registry settings.
Don't mess around in the registry unless you know what you're doing.

the best thing about the driver from the e4x00 series is that it disables the annoying problem where pressing on the lower left of the keyboard sends the controller a "ctrl" signal...

If i only use Pointing Stik or an externam mous everything is ok, the bussy "ring" moves, but then i use the touchpad and it stands still...

Is there anyone else with this Problem ??

Yes I have this problem too. I found that the only way to fix it is to use slightly older drivers unfortunately the older drivers do not have the circular scrolling feature. I'm not 100% sure if these are the drivers that I am using but if they are they should solve the problem. http://support.us.dell.com/support/...eid=R191022&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=262423
