received a new 17" 7720 this month. i went from a really nice screen on my ancient loaded 17R to this monstrosity. i sprung for the widest gamut FHD IPS 17.3" and it's terrible. the texture makes all lights/brights look so bad, like the screen is dirty. i don't think returning this for one with the UHD screen is worth the gamble, especially since i already spent so much time filling this machine up with my settings and stuff. i think i'd end up with a similar experience and maybe additional fallout from trying to support/power that screen all the time.

so, it looks like for heavy editing i will probably have to set up a monitor, small keyboard and small Wacom.

anyone else notice the appalling texture on these FHD screens?

PS: i am a long time Dell customer and the process to get this laptop was so crazy, i couldn't even begin to tell you - totally inept sales person (though nice) and so many systematic errors through the ordering and receiving process. i actually HATE Dell right now because of it. i couldn't have scripted a worse series of events as a consumer.

What make / model is the display? Moninfo is good for this. My suspicion is that the problem is caused by a heavy anti-glare coating. IIRC I've had some AUO panels with what I call the "screen door" effect. However, the other detail to check is whether display scaling is causing problems with some of your software. If some software is looking less sharp than it should then go to Properties > Compatibility > and disable display scaling for high DPI.

thank you for your reply! I don't know for sure what the actual make is.

I agree with your assessment that it's the coating. it definitely works very well in that regard as well as holding colors and such at VERY extreme viewing angles, etc. but this texture is so annoying!

i guess the best solution right now is to accept that it's otherwise a superb machine and i'll have to find an affordable small monitor solution to use when i am editing stuff other than personal stuff.

My hunch that it might be AUO was correct. The model is AUO109D / B173HAN and is used on several notebooks. One is reviewed here by notebookcheck who commented on the graininess. If you search the www for references to that panel then you might find alternatives. You can also try complaining to Dell about the graininess and they might agree to try another panel which might be better, worse or the same -the support people cannot influence what compatible exchange part the technician is given.

thanks. you're right! i am so clueless with this sort of thing.

i did a little research and see that people were able to replace this with an FHD IPS LG panel that is far superior. however, not in this computer - in an Alienware machine. it appears that the last gen 17" Precision, the 7710, may have come with the LG screen, which is interesting to me.

one guy on this forum said that Dell sent him the LG through warranty but then another said he was not able to get that sort of resolution and they wanted to replace the AUO with another AUO.

either way, i guess i can do this without Dell. the connector, dimensions, etc. seem to be the same between the LG panel (Dell P/N JWGJ6).
