    I have no idea if you are right or wrong, but to me, when my engineer and me changed the motherboard, and did clean install OS without any drivers and software, and then updated the A03, the system was crashed. I think A03 is incompatible with AHCI mode. I tested ATA and RAID(need to have 2 hard drives) and they work fine.

    Maybe I should just read a few pages back (just let me know) but it really seems like the A03 bios update is not beneficial? Would there be an advantage to updating for someone like me who uses CAD/CAM software almost exclusively with some finite element analysis along the way? I do use Adobe CS4 but thats a hobby and not priority. Thanks :)

    Not only that altoid, but Dell has removed it from the website. Wait on A04...it will be posted shortly. Always is :)

    awesome thanks :) on a side note, you wouldn't know how to enable cuda core processor capabilities in any of the flavors of linux you use would you?

    question 2: is intel's vpro technology usable/enabled/integrated/whatevered on these machines? I've not found anything explicit in reference to the m6500 but I found plenty saying the Intel wifi Ultimate-N 6300 and i7/i5 processors are equipped with it.

    I'm running gentoo with 2.6.33 kernel. I have dvdrw (HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GS20N). I'm sure FreeDOS is great but have you ever tried to get USB drive to work under DOS? Slipstreaming the exe onto a FreeDOS iso is a pain too :(

    I haven't even looked into that yet....I'm thinking of putting my beloved Slackware (or Salix) on this machine...haven't got around to it...but my Vostro 1220 is a linux laptop so I'm able to get my fix that way for now....:)

    Excellent! Could you please do me a favour and try to burn a DVD+RW?
    I have the same drive and am running 2.6.32 on Debian. I found that burning DVD+RW with kernel 2.6.27 and later is incredibly slow and filed a bug report against the Debian kernel:
    #578546 - linux-image-2.6.32-bpo.3-amd64: burning DVD+RW very slow with HL-DT-ST DVD+/-RW GSA-U20N - Debian Bug report logs

    If you can verify my result it might be easier to move this bug report to upstream. Otherwise I'd know that I must look for some other solution.

    FreeDOS and USB drives is dreadful, I know. It's one of the reasons why I didn't upgrade my BIOS and am still running A00. The other reason is the lack of transparency from Dell. There isn't even a complete changelog history.

    @altoid:
    I haven't dealt with CUDA so far, but I guess you'll find some helpful hints in the NVIDIA CUDA-Linux forum:

    If so, please give us some fedback.

    I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but for me I can't get it to burn correctly at all. It starts spitting out all kinds of SCSI error on write(240,16): [5 21 02] Invalid address and similar.

    For upgrading bios right now it looks like the best options is Windows PE disk.
