I guess it is some program conflict!
Two notebooks with the same issue - NO CHANCE IN YOUR CASE!

I just got my Vostro 1710 five days ago and I've gotten the BSOD at least once per day. 3 times today. What a flipping PITA!!!!

Piet, have you had any success resolving this issue?

    HI,

I have had the exact same experience with my Inspiron 1720 which I purchased last April 2008. It hasn't worked properly since day 1. I have tried using their online techs. like ten times, and nobody has fixed my BSOD problems yet. It's been 8 months and still no help from Dell.
I will never buy another Dell product again!

Good luck sending it back, Dell told me it's their policy to have you fix it on your own. Like I am a computer technician?

Maybe you should wipe it and reinstall windows. It is likely a program you have installed that is causing the problems.

I think my issue was related to my antivirus software (NOD32). I haven't had any issues since it's been uninstalled.

    SOLVED!!!
I studied the minidump files with WinDbg to find out the BSOD problem.
The cause of the BSOD is Norton Ghost 9.0. This is the first program I install on my computers because I always make a clean image (system backup) of the system first. Norton Ghost 9.0 runs well for many years on my other Windows XP SP2 computers. I can also make backups from the Dell Vostro 1710 with it. So I supposed, of course, this program was OK. But on the Dell Vostro 1710 (with Windows XP SP3) Norton Ghost 9.0 cause random BSOD crashes. Norton Ghost 9.0 installs Symantec LiveUpdate 2.0. (2.0.39.0). This program, which can’t be turned off, runs on the background and causes the crashes. Now I understand why the BSOD crashes occurs complete randomly, sometimes just after 10 days, without running any programs by myself or pushing keys. It looks as if it was a hardware problem.

    The WinDbg results are:
The stop code is 0x0000008E, the BugCheck is 1000008E,
The Process name is PQV2iSvc.exe (This is a Norton Ghost 9.0 service)
Probably caused by : GearAspiWDM.SYS (This is installed by Norton Ghost 9.0)

I have removed Norton Ghost 9.0 (which removed GearAspiWDM.SYS) and Symantec LiveUpdate 2.0. I never will use Norton Ghost again, it is programmed against all rules. What a horribly dirty Software! It is worser than the most evil virus. Software under Windows my never give blue BSOD screens. I will now use Paragon Drive Backup 9.0 to make system backups.
