That depends on what you are going to do with the M6400, and what softwares you will be using.

What's the ATI FirePro M7740 based off of (ie. consumer variant core)?

    It's based off the Mobility 4860. 640 stream processors, 128-bit, 1GB DDR5 RAM.

Nice, now we just need it to be available to purchase and some benchies... I doubt it will be much better than the FX 3700M in performance, but should definitely run a lot cooler due to the much lower fab process.

It's now available in the M6400 on the US store. Just +$100 over the FX 2700M, while the FX 3700M is +$349.

So I guess the FX 3700M is still king of the hill... and Dell says the FirePro has 60W TDP!

Yes Indeed! the FX3700M is stronger. Here are some specs takes from components info in dell's site:

    NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M
    Graphics Memory 1 1GB GDDR3 Dedicated
    Memory Interface 256-bit
    Graphics Clock Speed 600e/800m
Est. Max Power Consumption 65 watts

    ATI FirePro M7740
    Graphics Memory 1 1GB GDDR5 Dedicated
    Memory Interface 128-bit
    Graphics Clock Speed 650e/850m
Est. Max Power Consumption 60 watts

....just a a bit of more clock speed cannot justify the 128 bit of difference in memory bandwidth. I thin the ATI can be better seen as an alternative of the FX 2700M insted.
    Cheers

the GDDR5 makes up for the 128bit difference in mem interface. i'd say thins guy would very nearly match or possibly exceed the FX3700m, even if its a bit slower the difference in price justifies it
