Thanks for the tip. I just assumed there would be a guide with the mobo.

I'll print out the guide tonight and look it over real well.

I guess Dell misunderstood that I wanted to install the parts myself.

A tech is on the way right now. Let's see how this goes.

UPDATE: Dell sent me refurbished parts. Not sure how I feel about that. The tech has been OK so far.

I think it's policy for refurb replacement parts...but as long as it works and the tech is good, no harm done.

    Yeah. I don't mind them I suppose.

However, I really don't like the fact that there are 6 screws leftover, and the WiFi switch no longer is functional. And he can't for some reason figure out how to get the computer to boot normally. It just goes to something called "Manufacturer Mode: Level [04]".

When I asked him about the screws he just said "Oh, those are just extras I keep in my kit." I specifically watched him put all the screws in the same spot on the table. I know they came from my system. I'm a 3rd year Computer Engineering Major. I'm not an idiot.

He's still here working on it. I'll update when something changes.

UPDATE: He left with my 6 screws, and with my WiFi switch not being operational. He said, "Well, looks like everything's working. I'm outta here."

He didn't leave me any information or anything.

i'd call dell up and complain. wifi switch not functional is not acceptable.

for items such as the mobo, dell dosent consider it user replaceable, unless you have a ProSupport for IT warranty and your IT guy has the dell certification, as far as i know.

a note on refurb parts, its dells policy to mark even new parts as refurb even though they are from brand new stock that has been earmarked for service replacements

Dell asked me if I wanted to replace the parts myself. I said yes, but they still sent a tech.

Yeah, I'll be chatting with Dell very soon. Should I just accept that the tech left out screws and such? I really find that unacceptable.

Yeah. At this point I don't think I'll be as comfortable with this particular unit.

I wonder if they would want to send another tech or if they would send me a new unit.

My tech was really really great. I mentioned horror stories about left over screws and non-working machines and he was surprised people go away with that. Apparently left over screws are a big no-no as far as Dell policy goes, and if they have any left over this is a checklist of things they have to do. They are not in anyway supposed to leave with leftover screws.

My tech wouldn't leave until I had working internet, had checked the drives, typed on the keyboard, etc.

I'd say call and complain firmly but politely. If the CSR is any good, hopefully they will be on your side.
