    Hey guys,

I'm looking for some help here. I have a T41 that just failed. (Video/MoBo failure) The Hard drive is still good and I would like to transplant it to a working Dell D600. I realize that I'll need to load a bunch of drivers and stuff, but the HD will not even start the windows boot process. It just sits on the Rescue and Recovery screen. The harddrive is fully functional and will boot from a working T41. Any ideas why it will not boot on the Dell? Bios sees it, but will not start the windows boot process.

What do I need to do to this HD to make it bootable in a different(non-IBM) laptop?

    Thanks in advance,

    Lance

Try hitting F8 as it is trying to boot and then booting into safe mode to recover the data. You may need to reinstall Windows, as it will think it is pirated. If it is the same version of XP that came with the D600, you should just be able to reactivate using the key on the bottom of the machine.

The Drive will not even start the windows boot process, there for safe mode is not possible.

I think it might have something to do with the Rescue and Recovery partition. I Fdisk the MBR, but that didn't help.

If you have a USB HDD enclosure, extract the data that you require and reformat the whole drive. That may help to reinstall Windows with the HDD in the Dell.

Yeah, that is probably the only way without going nuts messing with the drive.

You should be able to boot with a Linux live CD or a file backup program to recover the data before reformatting if you don't have a USB enclosure to use.
