    Hi folks,

I bought my mom an off-lease/refurbished Dell Latitude E6400 about 18 months ago. I've had great past experiences with the E6400 (including my own which endured almost four years of daily ABUSE). The only repair my E6400 required was a new LED-backlit display a few months after the 3-year warranty expired. I paid around $90 for a slightly used WXGA+ replacement and installed it myself in less than an hour.

Mom's E6400 is having a problem that I've never encountered before. The system works fine on battery power, but connecting the power adapter causes the display/screen to turn off while the rest of the system continues to operate. Removing the power adapter from the plug makes the display come back on and the system functions normally again!?

I've tried every possible solution and troubleshooting steps that I've found on various websites trying to find the cause of the problem. After all of that, the most likely culprit seems to be the motherboard. If anyone here has any other suggestions, I'd love to give them a try, so please let me know!

Otherwise, I'm planning to order a used/refurb motherboard and install it myself. The only problem is the number of different motherboards (different part/id numbers) for the E6400 (with Intel graphics). I can't figure out which one to get.....how can I determine which one I need?

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Jason

    Hi Allfiredup,

Best way to identify your motherboard without opening the case is download, install and run...
    RW EVERYTHING or SPECCY.

These tiny programs will give you system information (more importantly the motherboard I.D.)

Have you tried a fresh windows install? Or play around with the advanced power settings?
