Happy holidays. I need some assistance on fixing a dell d800. I was reformatting the computer with windows xp and installing all the drivers that were recommended on dell’s website. Everything was working fine until I installed the nVidia BIOS that applies to the GeForce4 4200 Go video card. The drivers installed correctly and optimized the resolution, but when I tried installing the graphic card BIOS that were recommended it stopped responding. Therefore I restarted the computer and that’s when my problem started. When I restarted the computer nothing appears on the screen any more.

When I turn on the computer I can hear the fan and hard drive turn on but I see no video output. I searched the forums and internet with no luck. I even chatted with a dell consumer service stating that I either need a new video card or mother board since the BIOS for the graphic card didn’t completely install. Is he correct in suggesting this? Is there a way to reset the bios like a desktop which has a little battery on the mother board or is just a video card issue?

Thanks for your assistance and have a happy holiday.

Actually updating the Bios it is really a serious thing, I am guessing that you need a new motherboard, since the installation did not finish, indeed. I guess that they made you run diagnostics and some other stuff right?

No actually they didn’t ask me to run a diagnostics on it. They just asked me to connect it to an external monitor to see if the video outputs to it, which it didn’t. They suggested that it is the graphics card since I can’t see anything on my monitor but also suggested that it could be the motherboard as well. Since it was the bios for the graphic card that didn’t install properly would I actually need to replace the motherboard as well?

I’m trying to narrow down the least cost effect method to resolve the problem for someone gave it to me to fix it instead I ended up doing the opposite.
