    Hey everyone,
I recently bought a used Latitude d600 from ebay and i really like it. I bought it with WinXP already installed along with all the basics. Now im thinking about upgrading the Hard Drive (planning on installing a 160gb hd...too big maybe?) and also installing a Cd burner to make music cds. Ive read up on the installation of a hard drive on a d600 from an online dell service manual and i have a winxp install disk from my desktop and i was wondering if i could use that to install on to the new hard drive? (i have the product key for the one from my desk top) Also would i need any installation software for the cd burner?

You can use the XP disc with the serial sticker that should be on your notebook. You would need software in order to burn stuff, but you won't need software to use it to install XP.

If you are using the desktop then you can not use the xp disk and key from it, unless it is a dell oem cd.

I've used non Dell CDs to reinstall on my Dells before, you just need to use the key on the COA sticker.

So i shouldnt run into a problem with running the winxp install disk from my desk top in my dell laptop as long as i use the key on the serial sticker then? Its not a oem dell install disk, the computer was a custom built one my parents had for like 5 yrs and they gave it to me since they bought a brand new dell XPS desktop with vista

Nope, I've used regular XP and Vista CD/DVDs without a problem. The Dell OEM discs just check for the BIOS and then install without needing a key.
