And if so, shut down completely, put to sleep or hibernate, etc?

Shouldn't be necessary. Removing your laptop from the dock would be just like abruptly removing the attached peripherals, such as the external monitor, Ethernet, etc. Applications that depend on those peripherals, obviously, will encounter problems, but the system, overall, should remain stable and running.

I usually put it to sleep and have no issues when removing, but I have also removed it when on. Like the previous poster stated, as long as you are not using anything that is attached to the dock (hard disk etc...) it has not caused me any issues.

    Interesting-thanks for your replies.
Where then do all these rumors come from that docking your laptop when its on hurts the HD?

I would call that prudent advice. There's the risk of damage to the HDD if you move the computer when the HDD is running, particularly if the heads are accessing the disc when you drop the computer into the dock.

Just don't be rough with it when placing or removing the laptop from the dock and everything will be fine. There's no need to shutdown or anything like that.

Are there not directions for this action either with Vista or with the docking station? I am getting my first docking station and it would be great to know what the correct procedure will be. Dave

I have a docking station for E6400 that I haven't connected yet. I will do so soon.

On my old Latitude D610 there is an option on the Start Menu Windows XP to un-dock the computer. I think Windows XP looks at some property on the computer/docking station to decide if it should put this option on the Start Menu. On other laptops, e.g. HP business laptops, there is no un-dock option on the start menu and you are supposed to be able to unplug the laptop without running un-dock first.

As far as I can tell-there are no "un-dock" options in Vista.

For all dock buyers be forewarned:
I have the latest dock+an e6400 with all the latest drivers and still, my fan occasionally goes nuts ONLY when docked. Its obviously due to some bad heat dissipation and I wonder if it will ever be completely resolved.

Had I known about this prior to my purchase I probably would have not gotten the e6400.
