Does a 7540 that came with a Quadro have an MXM slot? Was looking to possibly upgrade the video to a 5000 from my 3000. If no MXM slot would a 5000 from a 7740 work in the 7540?

7530 and up take DGFF cards instead of MXM cards. They can be swapped around, though.

The best card for the Precision 7540 would be the Quadro RTX 5000. You can find them on eBay sometimes but there are actually four different versions of the card: Precision 7540, 7550, 7740, and 7750 each have a different version and there is no compatibility between them. You need one that has a shape & ports layout like this RTX 3000 card.

Example -- this one looks close but the size and port layout are wrong, it is for the 7740.

You will also have to swap out the heatsink. The part number for the RTX 4000/5000 heatsink in the Precision 7540 is M2F8R.

(Part numbers for 7540 GPUs in the first post.)
INF mod should not be needed for this upgrade because "RTX 5000 in Precision 7540" is supported by Dell.

Note that there's a 90W limit on GPUs in the Precision 7540. Because of this, a RTX 5000 won't be all that much faster than a RTX 3000 (if you're not hitting the VRAM limit in the RTX 3000); hard to justify spending $1,000+ on the upgrade. RTX 4000 and RTX 5000 actually perform almost exactly the same, because of the power limit, the main difference between them is just the VRAM.

    Wow, appreciate the info, thanks.
So if I found a 7540 that did come with a 5000 then you're saying that that's actually much faster than a 3000 because of the wattage?

No, all 7540's would be limited to 90W for the GPU. It would be the same whether you installed the card into your 7540 or if you bought a new system that already had one.

7740 allows GPUs go to up to 110W so it would be faster in that system. However, RTX 4000 and RTX 5000 in the 7740 both have a 110W cap so they both perform similarly there too. The difference again is just the VRAM.

@ccvortex: my 7530 has an RTX 5000 with a 90 W VBIOS that I will offline when my new 7560 gets here. PM me for sales details; I'd like to offer a reasonable price for it used.
