I have a Dell Precision M6400 and I can't seem to make my external mic work. I've also tried other microphones, but none of these would respond either. My current mic/headset is of this model Trust.com - ComfortFit Headset

I've checked that nothing is muted, I've adjusted the levels, tried installing new drivers. None of this has any effect. The bar by the mic that's meant to move when I speak only moves briefly when the mic is inserted and then goes dead no matter how loudly I speak into it. If I try using audio recording I get an error telling me it can't access the mic. When I try using adjusting it in skype the soundbar doesn't move either. Does anyone know how I can solve this? I'm starting to grow desperate here.
