I'm looking to buy a used or refurbished Precision m66/7/800 and have a question about the Covet edition.

My understanding is that the Covet editions are equipped with the top spec available. ie 6800 Covet would have i7 M49XX processor, K5100 video card, 32Gb RAM and a 1TB SSHD as well as a 500Gb SSD Touch screen etc....

I've seen a red cased m6700 on eBay that has a far lower spec than would have been available when it was supplied: i7 3740, K3000, Non touch, 16Gb etc.

So is it not the case that all Covet editions are the highest spec or is it just that it was possible to order a red case for lower spec models?

Covet does not automatically have the highest spec available, it was available in a number of different configurations. I might be mistaken but I'm pretty sure that out of the models that you mentioned, only the M6700 was available in Covet. The main difference aside from the red case is the glass-covered display, which is a Covet-only feature. (They also had a Covet M6500.)

    Thanks for your reply.

Looking at the Dell website I think there is an M6800 version.
It mentions best components etc..hence my thinking that the M6700 I mentioned mya just have had its case changed.

Nope. There were definitely a number of options to choose from when purchasing a Covet (any model), it did not automatically lock you into max specs.

    Thanks again.

So really "Covet" just means a red cover.

Seems to go against the advertising and positioning of them.

Well, as Aaron said, besides the obvious red case (orange on M6400/M6500 variants), the main feature was an "edge to edge" glass in front of the screen IIRC. Not sure if this was also on the M6800 since they dropped the Covet name for it.

More confused now. The pic and text above is from the Dell website so looks like they still had a M6800 covet avaialble.

The touchcreen versions look to have the edge to edge glass referred to.

Ah, sorry, yes, it's mentioned on the posted cutout. When I searched on the google, it didn't come up with any hits.

From the Precision m6/7/800 there wasn't a m6600 covet available. From your selection the only covets were the m6700 and m6800. Besides the CPU, one big difference between the two is the that the m6700 covet had an IPS RGBLED screen. While the m6800 covet had a TN WLED touchscreen panel without an IPS option. So it depends whether you want an IPS screen or touchscreen.
