I just picked up a new m6700. It came with 750GB Western Digital Black 7200 rpm drive, 8 meg memory. I had a Samsung 830 128GB SSD from an old m6500. I shrank the WD partition to the size of the SSD and copied the drive to SSD with Ghost 15. The system didn't boot on firs try. I booted to the windows repair disk. This told me if found issues and fixed them. It then rebooted and windows loaded fine. While I was installing programs the computer locked up. It would not even respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL. I powered it down and rebooted. Same thing after a few minutes it would lock up and the hard drive light had a slow blink.

I re-installed the WD drive and deleted the partition on the SSD. I then recreated the partition and did a full format. I then deleted the partition again. I then copied the WD drive again to the SSD. Again I had to use the repair disc to get it to boot. After I did this all seemed fine. I installed VMWare, Office 2010, AVG, and Chrome. All seemed fine and I turned the computer off. This morning at work I turned the computer on launched VMWare and it locked. So I rebooted and started just moving icons around on the desktop and it locked up again. I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL then clicked Start Task Manager. I then got a message "This program has stopped responding" with "Windows" in the window title. I rebooted again and did not touch anything and waited 5 min. Then I clicked on "My Computer" and all the icons disappeared and the cursor changed to the busy indication.

So I got out the old E6500 so I could post this question. I may just re-install the WD drive for now.

Have you tried a clean Windows install on the SSD? And is the SSD firmware up to date?

No I have not done a clean install. The laptop is brand new. I don't want to go through trying to load all the drivers. I have never been able to get everything working on a Dell laptop with a clean install. I did the same process with my old m6500 when I installed the SSD in that computer. I guess the drive could have gone bad sitting in the box for the last 2 months. The firmware on the SSD is what it came with I have not updated. Is there a better program to use to clone the drives?

I haven't really used any cloning software. I put an old SSD in my new m4800 and did a clean install. I had trouble with the drivers on my old studio machine that's now dead but not with the new precision.

I only mentioned the firmware because mine was out of date and causing a wake from sleep problem.

I use Acronis True Image to clone and it's always worked fine for me.

I also recommend that you remove the HDD when you boot from the SSD for the first time. I've had issues a couple times in the past where Windows tried to mount the wrong drive when booting from a newly-cloned drive (with old drive still present), which caused some strange things to happen. (After you successfully boot the SSD you can reattach the HDD.)
