    Hello,

This is my first post to this forum; everybody here seems friendly and helpful, so I thought I would ask for some advice. I'm trying to figure out whether a refurbished M6600 on eBay is legit or not.

    Here are the specs:

    - Intel Core i7-2620M 2.7Ghz Dual Core CPU, 4Mb Cache
    - 17.3" 1920x1080 RGB LED Backlit Screen (Panel model LGD0310)
    - ATI FirePro M8900 2Gb Video Card
    - 8 Gb DDR-3 1333 Mhz RAM (2 x 4Gb)
    - 320Gb 5400 RPM HDD
    - DVD+RW Drive
    - Backlit Keyboard
    - Fingerprint reader
    - Webcam
    - Intel 6300 b/g/n Wireless
    - 9 cell battery
    - 3 Year Onsite warranty, ends: 1/26/2015.
    - Windows 7 Pro x64

Looks all right, but if I try to configure a similar laptop on dell.com now, the ATI FirePro cannot be paired with the RGB LCD panel. That seems a little weird to me, but then again, this model of the M6600 uses a processor that is no longer offered, so it's possible that the combination was allowed at the time the build was done.

The main reason I'm interested in this particular one is because of the RGB LED display. I would have preferred a quad-core, but this would do quite well, at a significant cost saving. Even if I were to buy a new one, I can't get the RGB LCD option in Canada, and would be forced to go with the smaller M4600, at significantly higher cost too.

If someone can confirm that this combination did exist in that generation, I will most likely pull the trigger and order that M660 beast for my photo editing.

    Thanks,

    Luc

No that is not possible. Dell doesn't have IPS support for any ATI GPU's and they never sell 5400RPM HDD's for Precisions.

Yes, that eBay listing is the one. Too bad it not legit. I would really have liked a M6600 with IPS. Oh well.

I wouldn't be too sure about whether it's legit or not,

the CTO configs are drastically different from what large businesses custom order and also from the federal orders.

I'd say look up the service tag, verify the part number, and if it does show that it has an RGB screen, take it. The configs aren't fixed for large purchases or federal purchases, I got mine back then without a webcam and that was not even an option for CTO.

I looked up the Tag listed in the eBay auction (56ZX5S1) by entering it here:

    http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/555/ProductSelector

And the tag isn't recognized... Not too promising.

The laptop in the picture certainly does look like it has an IPS screen from the angle of the picture. I'm just worried that the laptop was pieced together using parts from various sources. The Windows install certainly doesn't look like a stock Dell install either.

Well if you are in dire need of an RGB screen m6600 I would trust the eBay buyer protection policy to give it a go with a credit card just in case.

But if you don't feel like a gamble I would say stay away.. Doesn't look right to me.(BTW, that screen is the legit install screen for the precision m6600 if you are worried about Windows)

Or if you need a good screen and can use a 15" I have one in my sig listed in the marketplace.

I wonder if anyone has tried to put AMD card in IPS-equipped M6600? We shouldn't assume that it is imposible just because Dell doesn't do it. ;)

Agreed. He updated the service tag on the listing (56ZC5S1), and it now works, but lists the wrong CPU. I can see that the RAM may have been upgraded, but a CPU change, probably not. I have to wonder if this guy is just using random service tags that are close enough, hoping people do not spot the difference when they receive the computer.

Either way, I'm going to stay away from this seller. I'd be more inclined to go ahead if he had higher feedback, but this just doesn't feel right.

Ryan, I'm quite interested in yours. I'll e-mail you in a minute.
