M6600 touchpad locks up

    I've had my M6600 for a couple of weeks now. So far, it has been fighting me every step of the way. A Dell tech just came out and replaced the motherboard and Quadro 4000m due to a nasty intermittent POST/BIOS setup lockup issue.

    That problem has gone away. I am now reinstalling the OS and drivers per the instructions I found on here. However, the touchpad has been locking up.

    If I touch it to move the cursor, the cursor moves a fraction of an inch and then freezes. The touchpad activity icon at the bottom right of the task bar is also locked with a blue pressure indicator showing the last position before lock up. The keyboard will still respond as will the cursor to a USB mouse installed, so the system isn't locked up.

    Does Control Vault or any of the other software I've never heard of or used before have an effect on the touchpad driver?

    Anyone else encounter this problem?

    im suspecting that just maybe something could be wrong with the ribbon cable. though it is probably going to be driver issue.

    If reinstalling touchpad drivers multiple times doesnt fix the issue, I will try another clean os install..

    Does it do the same thing in the BIOS? If so I'd bet on a loose or damaged ribbon cable. Heck, the fact that it was just torn apart makes me think it's the ribbon cable.

    Kudos to both of you. I pulled the keyboard and then disconnected the touchpad ribbon cable from the motherboard. The genius dell tech that replaced the motherboard and video card the other day must have forced the ribbon cable into the slot without lifting up on the retention mechanism first. Two of the pins are now delaminated from the cable and bent backwards.

    This guy was the same that mangled my XPS 17 so badly when replacing the screen that I sent it back for a refund.

    I spoke with Dell. I am going to mail this sucker back to them for repair. I am not messing with Unisys (local Dell contractor) anymore.

    Make sure you give them an earful about the shoddy tech. I avoid them like the plague.

    As a follow up, the Dell repair facility further screwed up by laptop.

    They sent it back to me with 4 missing screws, a bad hard drive, a note saying the replacement hard drive wasn't in place so the system is inoperable until they mail me a new one and they ran the Bluetooth cable through te hard drive cage making it impossible to reinstall the primary drive without disassembling the machine first.

    I blew a gasket and fired off a desperation email to Michael Dell and a few other Dell execs. They sent me the machine in my sig to make things right. Not a bad upgrade from the i5-2520m/Quadro 4000m I had. Needless to say, I'll be a loyal Dell customer for a long time. :)
