I need to replace my CPU (i7-840QM) in my m6500 and was wondering if the boxed(retail) version of the CPU works? Or do I need to get the OEM version of the CPU from Inter/DELL? The images that I found online for the retail version have a metallic silver cover whereas the CPU on my M6500 has none and the heatsink sits on top of it.

    Thanks

I don't think they ever sold the 920XM/940XM in retail, but somebody correct me if I'm wrong. 920XM floats between like 200-300 for ES, 350+ for QS and 450+ for OEM. 940XM is even more, and generally isn't worth the upgrade over 920XM.

    I had 920xm in M6500.
it was running 3.2-3.46ghz @4 cores with no problem

    Thanks everyone for replies.

My question is not what CPU works with M6500 laptop. I already know the CPU I want (i7-840QM) but I'm not sure which "version" to purchase: 1) Boxed (retail version) or 2) OEM version ?

The OEM version I know for sure is identical with the one in my laptop, it doesn't have the metallic plate on top, but it is much harder to find.

Retail version (Boxed) is easier to find but I've never seen the CPU inside and was wondering if it is identical with the OEM version and will fit perfectly under the heatsink in M6500 laptop.

    Thanks

The only difference is the product packaging, so the product number or so will correspond to just the packaging--retail boxed or OEM; here OEM can also come in a box, but it is a barebones box. I think these are also called tray processors; as the story goes they are delivered en masse "on trays" (but usually in barebones box for OEMS).
