Hi guys - just wondering if anyone can help I have been attempting to install xp64 on 2 fresh drives on a m6400.

I understand the XP disc as is will not install over the RAID setup on the M6400 and that I must create a new install disk with the RAID drivers "slipstreamed" onto them.

I understand I can use the program Nlite to this.

I have downloaded all the latest drivers for the m6400 from dells site and attempted to add them to an XP disc - everything seemed fine but when it got to the RAID driver part the drivers that Dell provide off their site - instead of providing the specific one I need for my machine I have a whole list of 10 or so, I didnt no which one to pick in Nlite so I first chose the PNP one - I made the disc - tried to boot and got a BSOD error after initially the setup process started to run.

Ok so I figured I would make another slipstreamed OS CD - this time make a better attempt to match the driver for the raid, anyhow when I boot my 6400 now with the 2 identical new drives I have put in there at the top of the screen is written "Intel Matrix Storage Manager option ROM v8.0.0.1039 ICH9M-E "

Looking through the driver list I was trying to slipstream one of them was ICH9M - so I choose that one.

Unfortunately though I still end up with the same old BSOD error.

Anyhow have any clues as to what I am doing wrong.

Ive never setup a raid array before, when it first asked my to create volumes I created one in RAID 0 taking up most of the 2 drives and a smaller volume in RAID 1 which I figured perhaps I could store some important data on and have a better chance of recovery should one of the drives fail though I have no idea if that is actually possible considering that the bulk of the disks are given over to a RAID 0 type storage system.

Ok guys so thanks for reading. Any advice

Hi guys - just in case someone comes to read this with the same problem at me at some point - well the solution wasnt too bad - I just had to make a disc and slipstream all the available raid drives for all the different controllers covered onto it and it worked.
I was reluctant to select them all as there was a caveat in Nlite suggesting this would be the wrong course of action, generally speaking of course as they could have no prior knowledge as to the specific requirements of each computer manufacturers installation progress.
So in short its all good - just slipstream over all the Matrix drivers in the list.

    Cheers

    Anhkieu,

Where did you find the RAID drivers exactly? The DELL site is a jungle. Is is the drivers below the category: SATA-Harddrives? Perhaps the one they call Intel-driver for Matrix Storage Manager?

When you slipstream the files do you expand the .exe files and only include the .inf files? (in which case I can only find two .inf files).

Yea its the Intel Matrix storage manager thing - thats the name of the Raid controller, so if you get all the intel matrix files that'll be your ticket.

re your second question during the slipstream process it should run the EXE (I think) - and there should be a point where you get to choose from a list of drivers.

Sorry wait a minute, you mean the EXE from dell that is just an auto archive extractor? In that case only slip the extracted files.

Normally though as far as I can tell when slipsteaming a device that has a an EXE or setup file you need to actually run that file through the program that is slipstreaming, anyhow in this case its not a program as such I think (sorry I cant actaully remember exactly what happened now) so just slip the extracted files.

Let us know if you got it working for the greater good
