    Hi guys,

there are two options of fingerprint readers to configure for the M6400.

    1. Internal Swipe Fingerprint Reader [add $29]

    2. FIPS Certified Fingerprint Reader [add $59]

At Dell Germany you have different versions of the reader:

    1. FIPS Certified Fingerprint Reader Biometric [zuzgl. 5,00 €]

    2. UPEK Swipe Fingerprint Reader Biometric [zuzgl. 35,00 €]

I wonder why the upgrade costs for the us version of FIPS Certified Fingerprint Reader differ that much from the german ones.

Ahh, btw, there's another one, new UPEK FIPS 201.

... too much confusion ...

    Please help me

I think their website is quite confused about the fingerprint readers, there seem to be at least three types

    1) the large square touchchip (I think this is the FIPS but it should be the expensive option, not the cheapest)

    2) the Authentec swipe reader which is "hidden" behind the Broadcom USH device (I have this type)

    3) another type of swipe reader which is accessible directly as a fingerprint reader.

You don't seem to be be able to choose which type of swipe reader you get, it's just pot luck.

There are only 2 fingerprint readers. The UPEK FIPS fingerprint reader and the Authentec swipe fingerprint reader. It seems that some countries are referencing the swipe as UPEK, which it is not. Sorry for the confusion.

Andy what do you mean being hidden behind the broadcom USH Device? Also is there any other software that will work with this other than the Wave? I have a E6500 and I hate the security software that comes with this. I had a Studio before this and the Digitalpersona software was great. I can't seem to find any other software that works for this Broadcom USH.

The fingerprint reader isn't accessible as a device that can actually transfer images of fingers to the OS (like some others which can then be used for other things like as a kind of scroll mouse) instead the USH reads and stores the fingerprint internally, and can just send a yes/no result of a comparison of fingers to the OS.

    Not that I've found.

I dunno about "hate", if it didn't hang the machine in various ways it'd be ok.

I noticed that the DigitalPersona logo is shown during installation, so their software is involved somewhere on the E6500.

When I asked my rep here in the UK which was which (Upek/Fips) I'm sure he said that Fips was the flat reader (ie one press) and the Upek was the swipe form. Both cost the same on the config screen. However, given he encouraged me to go Upek I'd suggest that the Fips one costs Dell more! lol

I also spoke to a "UK" rep, I ordered the cheaper not-FIPS one (it was £17 instead of £53 at the time) which the web site claimed was UPEK, but what I got was the Authentec.

I specifically ordered the UPEK (without FIPS) fingerprint reader with my E6400 and got an Authentec reader instead. I was not very happy with this and after Dell had tried and failed to replace the Authentec reader with a UPEK reader I got a cash compensation.

No matter what brand the fingerprint reader is, it seems that it is connected through the Broadcom USH device anyway which makes it inaccessible for standard fingerprint software.
