So after coming to the unfortunate conclusion that dell will take at least another 2 weeks to deliver me a m6400 in the uk if not longer I am looking for something else as I am only in the country til the 6th of Jan.

W700 seems like a probable choice - anyhow comparing the sizes I used this site which gives a visual look at the 2 laptops side by side.

    http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_comparison/20780-w700-vs-m6400

Im quite gutted to cancel the m6400 order but dont seem to have much of a choice.

The only other Quad laptop that I can find is an ASUS which looks a silly although is quite a look cheaper.

    UPDATE :

Added the Clevo d901C (HUGE) and the new 18" sony.
Its worth noting that the clevo looks somewhat bigger than it is because its height is 51mm at the front up to 60cm at the back so the laptop sits at an angle, the diagram doesnt take this into account and treats it as 60mm high from front to back

Are you choosing only regarding the cpu?

Well there are many more notebooks out there you can equip with a quad core.

    Workstations: M6400, W700, 8730W

    Gaming-Class: Asus, Alienware, Clevo-based notebooks

Go and get yourself a M6400. It's simply the best notebook out there. ;-)

Hmmm, it seems that everybody gets a M6400 as x-mas present - looking at all those guys waiting so long for it to ship.
For my point the w700 was way to big regarding the depth dimension. Also that there's so much space used for the frame around the display panel.

Yea I agree the w700 does look that little bit too big, if I can get it in my back pack then its ok but im guessing I couldnt. Thing is with the w700 I can order one and will most likely have it within a few days instead of dells mysterious stock system.

Re the second display panel no I have no idea about that? Its an updated model?

I've just shopped both systems so here's a little rundown of the major differences:

M6400 has, and W700 does not:
    eSATA port
    6-pin firewire (W700 has 4-pin)
LED backlight screen advertising 100% Adobe gamut (W700 advertises 70%, adequate for most photo work but not necessarily color correct print proofing)
backlit keyboard (W700 has a little LED "ThinkLight" in the screen)
programmable, backlit touchpad jog/shuttle with four hotkeys
middle mouse button in the row underneath the touchpad
four RAM slots allowing 8 gigs of ram for cheap, 16 gigs maximum.

W700 has, and M6400 does not:
removable / replacable cdrom bay, including a hard drive holster option. (I think it holds 1" hard drives.)
    Built-in X-Rite / Pantone Huey color calibrator
Built-in Wacom tablet surface (actual Wacom brand)
Wacom stylus pen with a holster in the case so the pen travels with the laptop
5 USB ports (M6400 has four)
Built in actual connector for DVI.
--(M6400 has only VGA and DisplayPort, so for DVI you need a DisplayPort adapter. W700 has all three.)
Ability to support two ExpressCards. M6400 supports only one. (You give up either CompactFlash or SmartCard to get it though.)
A modem for dial-up, god forbid you ever need it.

Chime in if I missed something!

They Bay adapter holds a 2,5" drive as far as I know.

The M6400s DVD-drive (media bay) is also changeable, so you can put in a 3rd (!!) HDD. The M6400 has a SmardCard, a PC Card and an Express Card Slot, you can't get two Express Cards, but you have all type of cards!

You will regret it. The M6400 is a beast. After all those notebooks are very huge, but for this the M6400 is somekind of slim compared to the W700. I've seen both and would never change the M6400 for the W700.

A wild card option here. Have you considered getting the HP 8730w Quad from the US? You can order through international-orders (note: never used it, but it's been around a few years)

Otherwise, since you don't many options, I would go with the w700.

I've considered the W700, but I've never been a huge Thinkpad fan - I've bought/used a fair number but I just never really get 'it' that people are raving about them. Perhaps it's because I don't keep my laptops for a decade :p I am happy with my Covets. Build quality is the usual Latitude-level (decent), but this time with an added touch of flair which works, which is rather unnerving from Dell.

The last two arrived - to complete my switchover from the M1730's I was using as semi workstations along with some HP w's - a little over a week earlier than the expected ship date I was grumbling about with no DOA's / faults so far. But to balance that out, the M1330's I ordered back in mid-'07 arrived more than a month late and might as well have been Apples given the number of times they were yo-yoing back from repair.

Unfortunately this variability is the price you (or rather, Dell) pays for selling direct, keeping no stock and building to order. Barring the M1330 debacle though, for me Dell's quoted delivery times seem to be on the conservative side these days.
