I am about to get an m6400.
What I do not know and would like to ask what you think is the following.

Is it worth it to pay more and get the quadcore processor now, instead of the extreme double-core?

Completely simplistic and dumb math are showing that the quad should have more than 150% processing power (4*2.5 =10, vs 2*3 = 6), yet this power cannot be used right now. (As far as I understand Windows 7 will be much more quadcore friendly than Vista).

So will this help the system "last" a bit longer (perhaps a year or so?)

    P.S.
I will use it for a lot of multitasking + heavy calculations (statistics and other)

Quad-support is more related to the apps you are using. For heavy calculations + multitasking more cores will help you a lot more than higher clock speeds.

Nothing is future-proof. Get what you need now and use it til you feel like you need a new laptop. For your usage, the quad core will be better.

    Tnx for the replies!
I believe I will go with the quad and let you know my impressions!

Actually intoxicate I am going for a a configuration quite similar to yours but I will get the quad core and the CCFL screen.
One of the reasons I am getting the m6400 is the ability to have 8G of RAM by buying 4*2G than 2*4 and save A LOT of money...
