I'm about to purchase an M6400 Covet, but need to keep the initial cost down. I'm planning to purchase an M6400 with the smallest single drive, then purchase a pair of hard drives from 3rd party later. I plan on reconfiguring the RAID since I'm planning on rebuilding the OS when it comes it.

    Question:
What brand(s) does Dell use for the M6400 7200RPM hard drives? I'd like to do some comparison shopping. Thanks.

Seagate, Samsung, Toshiba, ... I'll let someone else finish the rest.

There is no way of telling until you recieve your laptop. Then you could check the device/hardware manager or use a software like lavalsys's Everest to get a comprehensive detail of your system.
