Got a couple things to test, probably won't be for a while because am very busy but I'll show the goods:

ExpressCard to NVMe M.2 2242 (from Taobao)

    LG 156QHG display from Alienware x15 R1/Alienware m15 r6
    Specs: 1440p 240Hz 400-nits 141% sRGB, 100% P3 (unfortunately I don't think the iGPU can do 240Hz and I'm forced into using switchable from this T1000).
Pictured is also the QHD eDP display cable (needed for 40pin) and a 0.4 pitch 40-pin eDP to 0.5 pitch eDP connector adapter from Taobao

Someone would have to try it but I'd guess yes. (Wouldn't be able to boot off of that drive though. Just storage.) 2242 drives are somewhat less common than 2280. You couldn't put a regular Samsung EVO/Pro drive in.

    Cool!

I'd like to give it a try as well. :)

Many 2242 drives are on sale:

2242 drives can reach max 2TB:

I'm curious how stable the express card slot is.

Last time I added Express to USB adapter on my older M4800.
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/182452615356?hash=item2a7b05f8bc:g:MqMAAOSwOgdYoD5J
The adapter didn't initialize on M4800's start up.
I had to reinstall it each time... and then it eventually died. M4800 could no longer recognize the express card....

I hope that won't be the case again.

Hello, could you please share your experience of using M4800 with i7-4940MX ? How good is cooling system when CPU is heavily loaded ?
I find this CPU to be great but 57W TPD and conclusion from notebookcheck.com saying "it is only designed for 17" made me very doubt. In the web I found only overheating complaints.
    Thanks

@John CarlsonGreetings, as I see you have config with this CPU, could you please help me with that?

I highly recommend 4940MX. It doesn't get hot that much... honestly, it's not hotter than other CPUs I had.
It requires me to run fan sometimes but its performance is really awesome.
It's the fastest CPU you can use on M4800.

Do you guys think this M.2 card will fit in the adapter?
    Samsung PM991 256Gb PCIe NVMe SSD Gen3x4 M.2 MZALQ256HAJD Solid State Drive 2242
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/114995803446

I can buy this as a test card.

@John Carlson thanks for your reply. I understand this is the BEST cpu for 4800, and it is also shows great result in benchmarks. I should say I like this one, and luckily there is option to purchase this configuration in my local store. But according to some previous messages the temperature goin to be around 90C, which I didnt expect to happen due to such a great-reviewed cooling system.

by the way, could you please suggest:
    1) what kind of charger I would need for 4940MX ? is it different from one for 4900 ?
    2) how did you manage to install 16 RAM of 1866 ? according to DELL web site it supports only 8 ram of 1866

4940MX runs very cool most of time. I don't worry about heat too much at all...
Maybe the heat will be the problem when you overclock it or do very intensive job.

1866mhz is the fastest RAM that works on M4800.
    Buy this:
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/265227505454?hash=item3dc0ca8f2e:g:xt0AAOSwa59g67Il

The spec sheet says 1600 mhz only because 1866 mhz wasn't available at that time.

I got it. And it is simply installed on A/B position and not lowered to 1600 anyway ? magic

and I have question left, did you have to implement any undervoltage tweaks ? should I do it for better performance ? P.S. could you please give any advice about charger, should it be anything different from general given for 4900MQ model ?

    thank you very much
