M4800 Owner's Thread

Hey guyz!

Need some help over here.

If you remember last time, i got a M4800 from another person with heavy damage on CPU / Motherboard.
The previous owner had a screen LVDS 1920x1080 ,it's working in a different laptop just fine.

I got a new motherboard , i thought it was LVDS, but as i saw (works in external screen, the internal doesn't work) , i checked the service tag ,and saw the parts it came with it said :

So as i figure, the reason that the screen doesn't work is because even though i have a LVDS Cable (40pin) and the old screen was working in the old motherboard,i will need a EDP Cable and EDP Screen for the new motherboard to work internal ?

Just to verify it.

If yes, can you suggest me what should i get?

My M4800 motherboard with 1080 display died so I replaced the mb with LA-9771P. The original mb is LA-9772P. Everything seems to work except the screen - all I get is black screen. Works fine with external monitor via HDMI and VGA. MB came with A1 BIOS or something like that but same exact problem with the latest A26 BIOS. From reading this thread, either the cable or LCD panel is not compatible. Please see attached pictures for cable and LCD panel model. Connector on LCD panel is 30 pin.

Also worth mentioning is that the motherboard just didn't die. I flipped the computer upside down while it was on and tapped on the keyboard to loosen dust and the computer shut off. When I turned it back on again, the power LED flashed once then nothing. When I took the computer apart, I noticed a small piece of bare wire on my bed after I removed the plastic cover to access the motherboard. I think that wire must have shorted out the MB. Hopefully, it didn't also kill the lcd panel too. Please advise.

From reading this Reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/3ggtn9/lcd_panel_upgrade/ thread, I'll need to switch to both LVDS cable and 40pin LCD panel as well as new mounting bracket. All this would end up costing the same as a new LA-9772P motherboard.

It looks like we are in the exact opposite situation here. You didn't mention your motherboard model, but if it support EDP then it must be the LA-9772P. From my own experience and research, you will need new EDP cable, 30pin LCD panel and maybe new mounting brackets too. Maybe we should trade motherboard???

I think this 2TB mSATA will work on M4800 series without an issue.

 

So you can buy a 2TB Samsung T5 and take out its mSATA SSD and use it in M4800 and M6800.

2TB T5 sells for $250 as brand new.

Is M2200M still the best video card that works on M4800????

 

Yes, although the WX4150 is just a little behind the M2200 but for significantly less money, see my results with comparison links here.

Hello everyone,

I am looking to get either a M4700 or an M4800 to replace my M4500 and would be happy about some first-hand feedback from longtime users.

I've spent many hours reading up on old threads, but they are what they are - old threads. What I've found is lots of issues with the AMD GPU and some hints that the M4700 may be a better balanced machine overall (less issues). But since these threads are years old, it's unclear if any of those problems still prevail, or if they were due to driver issues that have been fixed long ago. Same goes for potential problems with the M4800's hinges, which may or may not be something that Dell has addressed later on.

On the flipside, M4700 seems to get hotter, and for mSata there's Sata II only.

I'm currently leaning towards getting an M4800 with an Nvidia card (just to be on the safe side) and replacing it with an M2200M when it gets to slow for my (moderate) purposes.

If you were looking for an older quality laptop, would you buy the M4800 you already have, or do you see reasons to back off?
