I am buying either a M4800 or M4700 and just stumbled upon the topics about the M4800's freezing problem. Just want to ask if that's resolved now, given that Dell is still (silently) releasing updates on their support website? Is the M4700 a more stable one?

To solve the freezing issue with the M4800, go to advanced power options in the Windows control panel and set "Link State Power Management" (under "PCI Express") to "Disabled". I don't think that Dell ever fixed this. It doesn't seem to affect all units.

I haven't experienced this issue for a few years. I believe I have LSPM disabled as Aaron mentioned.

Yeah, I was/am following that thread too.

But with my study of size N=1, I was able to overcome it. Note I'm running Win 8.1 - that may or may not be a part of the equation (not to mention all the BIOS/driver updates since).

I myself have not experienced this issue. Ive had mine since Feb and have yet to have any major issues with it. Any issue I have had has been with the OS or software, not the machine itself.

never had this issue at all on mine, the 4800 is very stable, but the 7710 is a lot more better. Cosmetically the M series is more lasting as the back cover does not scratch and will not have fingerprint marks, the 7710 even with the carbon fiber look will have some slight abrasions so be careful of the type of bags you use, apart from that the new gen is a much better choice.

FWIW, I work in a metal shop, and after nearly four years I don't have any scratches on my back cover.

which is why i tend to use the M4800 more often as i use it outdoors in the warehouse etc. Having said that the Precision's of M4800/6800 is heavier but nothing beats a 17" screen for work but for mobility they are heavy. The 7510/7710 is lighter but to need to find a proper bag so that abrasions to back cover are avoided. If cosmetics are really a top priority the 4800/6800 are a better choice. i wonder why Dell upgraded their top models with poorer cosmetics for back cover, should stick to the same old material. I did lodge a complain to Dell for this.
