Gotcha, thanks for clarifying. I've owned an inspiron and it was plagued with problems inside and out over the years, but it was also like that with my friend's hp(forgot the line he had, but it was a consumer-grade line..hinges fail quickly on both dell and hp home-grade systems).... which I've also seen in lenovo's home-user line as well.

Which is why I appreciate business grade. :)

    Looking for ideas here...

I bought my dad an M4700 within the last year. Installed two SSD's. The OS is on the primary 2.5" and I have all of his data on the mSata. Windows is configured so that all user data/program data resides on the D drive (mSata).

A couple days ago, he reported that he was getting a boot manager error. I can't recall now exactly - missing boot manager maybe. In any case, when presented with this error, pressing enter would proceed to load windows without a problem.

Today, however, the boot error message is not present, but a new problem exists. When Windows loads, it loads the default profile because the D drive (where the user data is stored) is unavailable. The D drive does not show in My Computer, and I can't get the Disk Manager snap in (or any Manage Computer) to load.

I have booted to UBCD and loaded Parted Magic. I can see the D drive, and I can browse its contents. This suggests the drive has not failed... but for some reason it isn't loading with Windows. BIOS has all drives enabled.

I'm looking for any next steps here. I'm at a bit of a loss.

    Thanks.

EDIT: I was able to get to the disk management utility through the control panel. The drive is visible there and I can even open/browse it from there. I successfully copied items from the D to the C drive, but I can't figure out why it isn't naturally appearing in Windows.

Dell's machine is fine. Dell's employees are stupid.

Agreed, unfortunately this is becoming rampant in the industry....

Hmm, I thought I posted something on here but I don't see it.

Any how, I had a question regarding Enduro, do you think if we were to try to upgrade to an AMD Firepro M5100, would Enduro be supported? Or will it be held back because the mobo/bio doesn't support it for the M4700?

For that matter.. if I got the M4000 and later upgrade to a K2100M, will Optimus work?

M4000 to quadro will give you Optimus, I don't think that a M5100 will give you enduro though, you'd probably need a BIOS update to enable Enduro if the M4700 has all the right hardware for Enduro.

    Thanks tijo.

Is the M4000's heat and noise as bad as people have reported? I like the performance of the M4000 and it makes the purchase cheaper, but if it's that* hot and loud, then paying a little extra to "downgrade" to a K1000m might be worth it.

Enduro needs hardware support from the motherboard which the M4700 does not provide.

I have a M4700 with WWAN, 759 7.2K hard drive, and an optical drive.

I don't really use the optical drive, and am hoping that it is possible to add a SSD, keep the hard drive, and use the SSD as the boot drive.

It became a bit confusing. I am not sure if I would have any real gain unless I also give up the WWAM, since I understand that consumes the other mSATA port. So, if possible, I really want to keep the WWAN.

The SSD i am looking at is the Crucial M500.

Any advice would really be appreciated.
