    Hello,

i recently buy a M4700 and i have issue with wifi card dell 1504 witch drop internet connection but keep connected to my LTE router alcatel H850. I order intel ultimate-n 6300 (i choose cheapest one so its probably branded by lenovo or hp). I swap the card and problems show up. I cant instal orginal dell drivers, its says no compatible with your system and after instal orginal intell drivers i recive code 10 in device menager. I remove dell 1504 drivers and nothing helps, code 10 still hang in device menager.

Will be graeteful for any help.

When I did some card swapping on a previous Dell system, I remember finding out that some Intel cards are locked to HP or Lenovo, and some are generic (work in everything). This was back with the Intel 4965AGN (or something like that). Not sure the technical reason, but if this is the case with your card, you'll probably need to find a different one. Ordinarily, the card should be detected and work with no hassle.

As far as I know, Lenovo and HP use a whitelist in the BIOS which stores the details of the approved cards. ie it's the computer, not the card, that causes the compatibility problem. I've come across no evidence that Dell uses a whitelist.

A quick Google gives a lot of hits about the Code 10 error. Here's one at Microsoft while this NBR thread suggests that the problem is caused by the Lenovo version of the card. Perhaps while branding it as Lenovo (or HP) some of the key device identification information has been deleted such that Windows running on another brand of computer can't properly identify the card. So perhaps the whitelist also contains a lookup table which reports the proper card hardware ID to Windows.

You don't need a Dell branded card. A plain Intel card should be fine.

... so if dell laptops have a whitelist its very clever one, becouse lonovo`s laptop wont even boot with non-lenovo card. I had to use moded bios to swap wifi cards in my T60p and x200 tablet. Maybe someone can post here hardware ID of intel ultimate-n 6300 witch came orginaly with dell M4700.

    My card id is:
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4238&SUBSYS_11118086&REV_35
