uhh.. thats great but what about Optimus?

What you've done is forced the Nvidia card to be on all the time which will drastically reduce battery life (which is the whole point of having the two video cards).

Greats news that we're getting somewhere with the issue though.. appears that it is something to do with the video drivers.

Maybe you installed drivers in wrong order?

I just reformatted my system, installed Windows 8 and run Windows Update - it automatically installed newest Intel and nVidia drivers and brightness control with Fn keys works correctly.

Edit: correction - it worked when Windows installed drivers, stopped after I installed something... Fortunately settings associated with power plan seem to work correctly.

Bumping this to see if anyone has had any better luck. I tried uninstalling both video drivers and updating with the latest drivers from Windows Update.. worked for a bit then stopped.

This is definately a problem with the intel graphic drivers.

I submitted a ticket with Dell Pro Support and they told me they are working on the issue, it's known and they are waiting for Intel to provide drivers to correct the issue. Dell told me that the manufacturers are not providing driver updates fast enough and they are pushing them as much as they can.

Disabling Optimus and running off of the Nvidia card works properly.. just the fact that you loose out on battery life. Guess we'll all have to wait for better drivers to be released.

If you are having the same issue, i urge you to contact Dell and submit a trouble ticket.. the more the better.

    SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Intel 3000 HD driver = 8.15.10.2353
    Nvidia 2000M driver = 296.79

All is working now, brightness controls and Optimus. I suspect this driver combination would also work for anyone having issues with M6600 and windows 8 brightness controls.

    Fantastic.

That's an older Intel driver, intended for Windows 7. While I imagine it will work fine in Windows 8, you might find some apps complain about missing features. For example, to test, if you have a Netflix account, try the Windows 8 Netflix app, it will complain about features missing from your driver if you are using a Windows 7 driver. (I've actually only tested this with an NVIDIA card so I'm not sure what the situation is on the Intel side.)

I'm mostly just curious if it works or not, I know it might be hard to find a newer driver that doesn't break your brightness controls again. If you're not using any apps that complain then just ignore me and keep on with what you have working. :p

(That's also a Windows 7 NVIDIA driver. I think the NVIDIA driver shouldn't have anything to do with the brightness control so you should be able to get away with upgrading to a newer one there if you so desire. Dell has version 306.68 posted.)

This! I've been able to adjust brightness with the old Intel 3000 HD driver = 8.15.10.2353 and other nvidia drivers. 307.35 in dell's website works and 310.70 in nvidia's site Works too.
No problems with optimus either. Good luck with your machines and its just a case of waiting dell to publish updated drivers for Windows 8 (Intel Graphics and fingerprint reader). M6600 here but you should have no problema with you m4600's. Good luck.

Not to revive an old thread but have been dealing with this issue and other than some ordering of driver installs and down grading the BIOS, this seems to NOT have a fix. ALSO, everything I read is about NVidia and Optimus, well I can report that using the AMD FirePro M5950 & M5100 under fresh Windows 8/8.1 installs, yields the same result.

FN+ up/down changes nothing. Settings in Windows does nothing, changing in BIOS is the only way, which I refuse to accept...

AND... I have the i7-2760QM, which has the Intel HD 3000 graphics and it doesn't even show in the BIOS OR DEVICE MANAGER! I'm running the A16 BIOS for the Precision M4600

Anyone got anything on this other than it's a 2 yr old laptop and Dell is never going to issue a working 8.1 driver and just tell me to buy a new laptop?
