I just got a new M4400 and have one small issue with it that I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced. The DVD/CD drive will spin at full speed all of the time if there is a disc inserted in the drive. No disc in the drive and it's fine, tried different discs and problem is the same. This seems to only be a issue with Vista installed. I tried all of the following. Removed DVD driver, let windows reinstall. Reinstalled Windows Vista fresh from Enterprise SP1 DVD. Drive spins down running Ghost via a boot CD. Swapped the DVD/CD drive with a co-workers. Co-worker runs XP and her drive spins down after a minute or so of no activity with the disc in the drive. Swapped my hard drive into her M4400 and problem still exists so it's definately not hardware. It has to be Vista, a setting in Vista or a BIOS setting or something.

Any ideas? Haven't contacted Dell yet, but will when I have some time.

    Thanks

By "harddrive" i think you mean the disk drive itself, if so the common link is as you say vista, that is to assume both your disk drives are the same (often that isnt the case)

I would call DELL possibly Vistas generic optical drive isnt playing nice with your Diskdrive, failing that - your firmware is the next suspect.

    Things to do:
    Update optical drive firmware
Talk to DELL about a device specific driver to use in place of Vista's generic driver.
