As an owner of the M3800 UHD (2015), how reliable is the machine for you?

  1. Very. No failures since purchase.

    Hi everyone,

I've just seen that this machine comes with a UHD screen now. Quick question to anyone who may still have this machine: have the common previous issues (whine, motherboard, usb boot) been worked out on the new UHD versions and are machines reliable?

    Cheers,

    Hex

Maybe ask in the owners thread rather than an entirely new one?

I actually have and I thought that since that thread has users from the original model, that the answers may be based on all models whereas I'm interested in the 2015 onward models with the UHD panel. But, no one has answered there yet.

I see you have the QHD+ panel. How long have you had the machine with you and do you find it reliable?

I'll ask on that thread as well.

Just about two years, no problems so far. I don't believe anyone with an M4800 has had issues with coil whine though, or booting from USB.

Thanks for sharing! Just as you replied, someone else did on the owners thread!

Yes. I may get an m4800 as well (replacing the W530 I currently own) to be able to drive a 2.5K and a 4K monitor at the same time. What I need to research now is whether the M4800 needs a dock for that or not.

How tough is the machine for mobility? as in...is it easy to get dents on it? I carry my laptops usually with other photo and video gear and although they are in a separate compartment, some of my bags don't have much padding in between. Thinkpads are good for stuff like that because of the plastic build which makes them flexible and less prone to dents. MBPs are not so lucky but at least you can buy hard shells for them.

Without a dock, the digital video outputs are DisplayPort and HDMI. The DisplayPort can drive a 4K display at 60 Hz. The HDMI port is HDMI 1.4, which can drive a 4K display at 30 Hz, but it should be able to drive 2560×1600 at 60 Hz (I'm guessing your "2.5k" is something like that). I'm looking at the spec and it says 2560×1600 at 60 Hz is available since HDMI 1.3. Your display would also have to support HDMI (version 1.3 or better).

(With a dock, you get two DisplayPorts so you should be good there in any case.)

The M4800 chassis is a combination of plastic and magnesium/aluminum alloy (a bit tougher than the aluminum in the MacBook Pro), it's probably the toughest laptop I've ever seen that wasn't ruggedized, I think it would be really hard to get a dent.

    Hi Aaron,

    Thanks for the reply.

The combo, as I'd need to use it, would be to drive a 4K TV with the HDMI out because I need the DisplayPort to be used with the 2.5k (2560x1600, yes) with my 10 bit monitor for colour accuracy. So, I assume that I should be OK for 30Hz at 4K for a TV for monitoring.

In any case, the 4K video I have is not 4:4:4 or 10 bit so a 4K 10 bit TV/monitor is not needed so HDMI out should be more than enough for that purpose.

Since I see that the M3800 also has HDMI and DPort, do you believe I may be able to do the same out of that machine like the M4800? Not thinking of making it the main working computer because I'll def need the muscles of the M4800 and either a Firepro 5100 or a K2100m.

Using HDMI to drive the 4K TV should be fine as long as the TV itself is happy with 4K/30Hz. Other users have confirmed that 4K/30Hz works over the HDMI port.

As for the M3800, I'm much less familiar so you shouldn't take this as confirmation, but I'd very be surprised if it is not also able to do this. It has the same important parts (available ports / GPU configuration).

Cool. Thanks for the help and info. I'll keep on researching and pull the trigger soon enough.

    Cheers,
