3 questions about the Dell Precision M2400...

    1. Popularity
I wonder why there are so few threads about the M2400 on notebookreview.com! There are way more threads about the similar 14" Latitude D6400 or the 15" Precision M440! Why is this?

    2. Quality
If you have a M2400, are you satisfied with it? Do you have problems? What would you improve?

    3. Price
I'm from Canada and it seems there are less coupons for Dell Canada than for Dell US. The default M2240 is currently listed as (1670$ - 251$) = 1419$CAN, which is 1,133.40$US.
What would you do to get a better price?
    Wait for a chistmas discount?
Call a rep and try to get a better price (how much can I save doing this?).

    Thanks for any help!

    1. Probably because it's usually a hair more expensive than the E6400 for essentially the same thing

    2. I have one and I like it a lot. 3 things I don't like, 1 the black plastic shows fingerprints very easily, and the audio driver sucks in Windows (have to disable the built in speakers to get decent sound out of the headphone jack). The Linux audio driver has no such issues. Third, the touchpad doesn't feel right to me, I had to spend a lot of time adjusting it in Windows, and I haven't been able to find a Linux driver for it yet.

    3. I would look at the coupon sites every couple of days, and try calling a rep, you never know. There are some coupon mailers being sent out for 40% off a Latitude and I think $350 off a Precision. I got one today, not sure if they are going out in Canada or not.

I own one. For the most part I have been pretty impressed with it.
There are few things like the sound driver Dillio talks about. The bluetooth
either the driver or the card it self has alot of noise to it. When in the dock there are times that fan goes full blast for 20 mins or more for no reason what so ever. This is with all the temps in the norm. The finger print software is worthless, but not the fault of Dell. Other than those points its a great laptop and was the right choice for what I needed.

I guess you are right. But the M2400 still has a better video card and has a "ISV" certification, wathever it means.

I can live with those issues I think. Thanks for the info.

I have no idea where to look for coupons valid in Canada! Any tips on this?

When using the laptop in the dock, do you open the lid or let the laptop closed? I plan on using the laptop monitor as a secondary monitor, while in the dock.. Maybe it's better to let it open to dissipate the heat?

    Thanks for the help!

I leave it open but its not in use. The vid card can only drive two monitors at a time. My "suggestion" to you would be to buy a 2nd monitor. There cheap enough now days and WELL worth the what 220 bucks at most?. As far carrying it around its not to bad. I'm pretty spoiled since I have a IBM X300 which weighs next to nothing. I actually have been using that more than my 2400. But there are hard limits to what the IBM can do, thats when I switch off to my trusty M2400!! Just rem the weight on this thing from what they say and what is to me is totally different. I think mines up there in the 6lbs range.

Most of the time I'll use the M2400 as a desktop, in its docking, so I don't mind its weight too much.. But thanks for the warning!

What would you suggest? I want matte LED screen, backlite keyboard, eSata port (if possible, for a huge, fast, external hard drive) and the CTRL key to be at the total left of the keyboard (therefore no Thinkpad for me). I prefere 14" for portability but I wouldn't mind a 15" if 14" laptops are not powerful enough.

I'll use this laptop mainly for programming (all day long) and web surfing so nothing very CPU intensive. But I'll probably keep the laptop for a couple of years so I want it to be powerful enough to run upcoming applications. Do you think the M2400 is a good choice for me?
