I'm trying to connect a Latitude E6430 to a 1920x1200 monitor with an HDMI cable.

When the monitor is not connected, the display on the laptop fills the LCD. The Display applet says the resolution is set to 1600x900, which sounds right.

When I connect the monitor the laptop screen goes dark, then reappears with dark strips on the sides. The monitor shows the same image, which fills the screen. The Display applet says that the resolution is set to 1440x900.

The Display applet also says the monitor is not there. At least, I think that’s what it’s saying. The “Display” dropdown says, “1|2. Multiple Monitors,” and the display diagram shows a primary display only, identified as “1|2.” The box that ought to represent the secondary display contains the text “Another display not detected.”

This appears to be some sort of mismatch between the laptop’s hardware and software, or else a problem in the firmware. Clearly another display is detected, since the laptop changes its resolution when I attach or detach the monitor. The computer just doesn’t detect the resolution correctly or let me change it.

Does anyone know what is going on here? How to fix it?

Thank you, that did it. It's a weird solution to a weird problem, but as long as it works, I'm happy.
