I'd say this is an excellent choice for a student.

I myself am a PhD student and this laptop is perfect for me. Dell's customization and warranty are great :)

Sounds good to me, the only thing is I previously bought from the Outlet before so I know how it works. The only thing is that it seems like every E6400 has an LED screen, should I take this with a grain of salt?

Yeah other then those slight issues which were prompty resolved by Dell, I am actually very happy with my E6400. Also I tend to use it more as a desktop type computer, rather than a mobile computer. I use it for 8-10 hours a day, 7-8 hours on the dock on my desk. It travels fine and is powerful enough to handle ~90% of my needs. Overall I would recomend the E6400 to anyone who would want a fairly powerful, robust unit. Definatly get the highest warranty you can afford.

    Should I buy Windows 7?

It's available at our school this coming week at a price of next to nothing. It's Windows 7 Ultimate and it's available in 32 or 64 bit (I'll be getting 64, obviously).

I'm using Vista Business 64 bit right now and like it.

So, should I upgrade? Does everything work with the E6400 properly?

    Thanks!

Ouch that is pretty bad. I waited 6 weeks for me e4200 when it first came out, so I guess I will just wait and use the e4200 until it shows.

I have both 7 Pro (32 and 64) am weighing whether I should upgrade now or wait? It is so tempting, but if there are going to be major compatibility issues I'll probably hold off.

Well see the Windows 7 forum section, you will how people are very pleased with it.

You'll LOVE Win7. The day I put WIn7, I started using more my laptop than desktop... I got hooked to it, and I really liked Vista over XP.

When I contact Dell about Win7, they told me that the laptop will be fully compatible with Win7 64-bit. Which makes sense as this laptop has.. sorry HAD (you never win with technology :) ), the latest technologies. It it was out a little over a year ago, so Win7 support only makes sense. And it has the power to handle it without issues.

All it's missing is official drivers for all components for Win7.. but that should come shortly or at Win7 release on October 22nd.

If your Win7 is legit and non-Beta, I personally don't see what stopping of installing Win7 64-bit. If you have a beta, then be prepared to re-install it once you have the official release on October 22nd.

Despite the lack of official drivers for many hardware components of the laptop, the laptop still runs fine. I did notice a decrease in battery life, but my research onto the problem concluded it's 100% driver related (or something is wrong on my side)

WXGA+ (1440 x 900) definitely has LED backlighting while Dell has changed over the WXGA (1280 x 800) earlier this year. There is a risk that WXGA from Dell Outlet could be the old model.

I think WXGA+ is the better display option. If you are happy with 1280 x 800 then also consider 13.3" notebooks.
