You need to cut off some tabs, and also a part of the metal hinge.

Thought I'd better add my experience with this conversion in case it helps anyone. I have a E6230 (very similar to the E6220), so I decided to try the mod based on the OP's luck with the E6220.

I got the panel from an israeli ebay seller (you don't get as many options living outside the US; US ebay sellers seem to be too lazy to offer shipping to other countries), it was a "recertified" lenovo part, but the auction had very good photos so I could confirm it was the second revision IPS panel without the ghosting issues reported with the first version.

Once it arrived it was easy to swap with the old one for a quick test, which worked fine with the exception of the minor issue of a faint blueish blob on black backgrounds. As this only showed up in the dark with the backlight up high it wasn't a big deal, certainly not enough for the hassle of returning the panel. Unfortunately I ran into the same issue as the OP with the panel not quite fitting; the original panel is a very tight fit and the new one is ever so slightly larger.

Armed with a dremel I was able to cut the same tabs off the hinges as the OP, as well as trim a couple of offending cable guides, and got the panel to fit. I did this mod without disassembling the whole laptop, i just unscrewed the hinge from the lid and covered the rest of the laptop up to stop metal dust entering. Even after the mod it was a tight fit, and I had to muck about with the bezel to get rid of a couple of pressure spots which were causing backlight bleed (IPS is fairly sensitive to this), but I managed to get it to a point where it's working well.

All done it was a bit of a pain, but not too expensive ($130 USD shipped for the screen), and well worth it; while I'd much prefer a higher resolution the IPS screen makes a big improvement to what is otherwise (in my opinion) a great laptop. Thanks to GadgetsNut for the info and inspiration!

I also had to force the panel into the back cover, and it's a tight fit. Does the E6230 bezel also use adhesive tape? I peeled almost all of it from my E6220 bezel, leaving only two 1" strips where the bezel wasn't sitting flush.

BTW, Lenovo FRU 04W3462 is the second revision of this IPS screen, which is also what I got. There's now a third revision used in the X230, which is LP125WH2(SL)(B3), FRU 04W3919, but I'm not sure if there is any significant difference.

I think mine only had the tape at the bottom, where I didn't have any issues after the dremel assault. My main issue was the left side at the top; it bulges the bezel a tiny bit there but with careful tightening of the upper left screw (I think I added a washer) and the removal of one of the plastic clips I reduced the stress from on panel edge enough that the backlight bleed, while still slightly visible, is okay.

I didn't know about the third revision, it was definitely the second I got. Quickly checking ebay for the third FRU only finds annoying sellers with "compatible" non-IPS screens trying to pull a swift one.
